I’ve solved the oil level check issue…
Perhaps yesterday I hadn’t yet gotten the oil up to temp enough.
Today while working out the drag link adjustments on my steering wheel, I took the truck out for a hot lap around the paddock. This got me to 100C on oil temp, and with my clinometer’s centered out to zero I was able to get the computer to run an oil level check happy days.

I did my second oil change today, I went for a 5w40 instead of the 0w30, there is only one 0w40 that I could find that has BMW LL04 rating, and I couldn’t find any locally. Next time I’ll try ordering in advance. That said it just doesn't get cold enough here too justify the 0W rating so the 5W should be fine.

If anyone is interested I used Shel Helix HX8 ECT…

Have to admit Im a morris lubricant trade buyer, use all their products, This one is ideal for me as also run VW / Man Commercials with the VW 504/507 spec which also covers BMW Long life 04.

Here's what a local dealer gave me in Australia for diesel engine oil:

15k servie recently (Purnell, Sydney - Aust) and I’d noticed that the dealer was now using Fuch’s Tital GT1 0W-30. Previously they were using Valvoline Synpower.

I use the Liquid Moly when I do my own oil change. One of the few I can actually get my hands on.

Here is the thing with engine oil and driveline oils. Try and stay with one brand and a brand that the owner trusts for the key reason that the additive package from one brand to another can be significantly different and every time the engine oil is changed the new brand of oil will have an additive package that will try and replace the additive package from the previous brand of oil. The crux is, try to stay to one brand as long as possible and do not change brands every service. This is something I have learnt from the oil analysis labs and oil sampling and analysis of oils in off-road machinery.

Hi Pat, Massimiliano says that the manufacturer prescribes the oil I indicated for this engine. I didn't specifically request that type.

Old Thread I know but wanted to mention if your A liquid Molly fan you should like Fusch Titan guess who owns Liquid Molly. I have used Fusch for years in all my Toymotas and it has never failed me On the last service I could not get any so decided chuck the habit and used the Penrith and it ran noticeably quite and had better fuel economy. It has made me wonder about my life choices a bit with the Grenny should I drop to 7500KM services since I saved a lot in the oil cost? won't hurt my bank but can only be good for the engine. I normally do 10K service.

For a B57 Diesel Grenadier in a hot climate ( Australia ), a 5 W 30, C2, C3, LLO4 oil should offer better protection than a 0 W 30, C2, LL12FE oil, the FE standing for fuel efficiency.
The service manager from the large BMW dealership a couple of hundred meters from where I live told me to use C2, C3 5 W 30, as the C2 0 W 30, is to thin for Australian conditions they only use 5 W 30 from new in all their BMW diesel's in Australia, and the Grenadier is a much heavier and harder working vehicle.
There is also a Penrite oil 5 W 40 that meets C3 and LL04, I did not ask him about that but towing a caravan in summer in northern Australia ?.
A 0W30, is good for temperatures as low as - 35 celsius, a 5 W 30, is good for temperatures as low as - 30 celsius.

I learnt something about shear stability watching this YouTube today. According to old mate, the further apart the numbers are the more prone to shear the oil is. So 5W30 is less prone to shear than 5W40.
Or something like that.

I watched the same video about 5 hours ago, and about 3 of his other videos, very informative, and a 5W30 is less prone to shear than a 0W30.
