Diesel Diesel Oil Specification Thread (B57 Engines)

I’ve solved the oil level check issue…
Perhaps yesterday I hadn’t yet gotten the oil up to temp enough.
Today while working out the drag link adjustments on my steering wheel, I took the truck out for a hot lap around the paddock. This got me to 100C on oil temp, and with my clinometer’s centered out to zero I was able to get the computer to run an oil level check 👍 happy days.

I did my second oil change today, I went for a 5w40 instead of the 0w30, there is only one 0w40 that I could find that has BMW LL04 rating, and I couldn’t find any locally. Next time I’ll try ordering in advance. That said it just doesn't get cold enough here too justify the 0W rating so the 5W should be fine.

If anyone is interested I used Shel Helix HX8 ECT…

I just had my diesel B57 serviced and they used this

Also just done my second change used MULTIVIS ADT VX 5W-30, (Morris Lubricants )
Have to admit Im a morris lubricant trade buyer, use all their products, This one is ideal for me as also run VW / Man Commercials with the VW 504/507 spec which also covers BMW Long life 04.

Not sure why all of you are fretting over Petronas.
I am using Mobil 1 ESP LV 0w30 which is BMW LL-12FE approved and is readily available at auto doc
Yep, that's what I have, readily available in the 🇬🇧

Ciao Andrea,
in my case our (Toyota) workshop (yours and mine) is using the Toyota Oil 5W-30W or did you ask for 0W? Will ask Massimiliano next time.

Here's what a local dealer gave me in Australia for diesel engine oil:

Engine oil Diesel

Fuchs titan GT1 LL-12 FE SAE 0W-30 BMW LL-12 FE

Valvoline SYNPOWER LL-12 FE 0W-30 FULL SYNTHETIC ACEA C2 BMW LL-12FE

Liquid Moly TOP TEC 6100 0W-30 ACEA C2 API SN BMWLL-12FE

15k servie recently (Purnell, Sydney - Aust) and I’d noticed that the dealer was now using Fuch’s Tital GT1 0W-30. Previously they were using Valvoline Synpower.

I use the Liquid Moly when I do my own oil change. One of the few I can actually get my hands on.

Here is the thing with engine oil and driveline oils. Try and stay with one brand and a brand that the owner trusts for the key reason that the additive package from one brand to another can be significantly different and every time the engine oil is changed the new brand of oil will have an additive package that will try and replace the additive package from the previous brand of oil. The crux is, try to stay to one brand as long as possible and do not change brands every service. This is something I have learnt from the oil analysis labs and oil sampling and analysis of oils in off-road machinery.

If you're in the UK this is a good buy, BMW LL-12 FE approved and readily available:

Valvoline SYNPOWER MST FE C2 0W-30 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil 5L - 901313

Hi Pat, Massimiliano says that the manufacturer prescribes the oil I indicated for this engine. I didn't specifically request that type.

Old Thread I know but wanted to mention if your A liquid Molly fan you should like Fusch Titan guess who owns Liquid Molly. I have used Fusch for years in all my Toymotas and it has never failed me On the last service I could not get any so decided chuck the habit and used the Penrith and it ran noticeably quite and had better fuel economy. It has made me wonder about my life choices a bit with the Grenny should I drop to 7500KM services since I saved a lot in the oil cost? won't hurt my bank but can only be good for the engine. I normally do 10K service.

For a B57 Diesel Grenadier in a hot climate ( Australia ), a 5 W 30, C2, C3, LLO4 oil should offer better protection than a 0 W 30, C2, LL12FE oil, the FE standing for fuel efficiency.
The service manager from the large BMW dealership a couple of hundred meters from where I live told me to use C2, C3 5 W 30, as the C2 0 W 30, is to thin for Australian conditions they only use 5 W 30 from new in all their BMW diesel's in Australia, and the Grenadier is a much heavier and harder working vehicle.
There is also a Penrite oil 5 W 40 that meets C3 and LL04, I did not ask him about that but towing a caravan in summer in northern Australia ?.
A 0W30, is good for temperatures as low as - 35 celsius, a 5 W 30, is good for temperatures as low as - 30 celsius.

I learnt something about shear stability watching this YouTube today. According to old mate, the further apart the numbers are the more prone to shear the oil is. So 5W30 is less prone to shear than 5W40.
Or something like that.

I watched the same video about 5 hours ago, and about 3 of his other videos, very informative, and a 5W30 is less prone to shear than a 0W30.

For the B57 diesel Grenadier if I use a C2, C3, BMW LLO4 5w30 oil offering superior protection over a C2 LL12FE 0w30 oil in Australia's hot climate, will it affect my warrantee ?
Specifically the oil I am looking at is, Penrite full synthetic C3 Enviro+ 5w30 C2/C3 BMW LL04

The hot climate protection is in the "30" spec. Penrite 0w-30 LL12-FE is guaranteed to meet the specs where 5w-30 is recommended. At high temp, the protection offered by 0w-30 is the same as 5w-30. (there's another discussion regarding oil shear which theoretically ranks 5w-30 above 0w-30 in stability, but for regular oil change intervals it's moot). If you're concerned about very hot weather, then consider a 5w-40 weight mid SAP low ash which meets dpf requirements. Re. warranty ...🤷., I'm wondering what oil weight is specified for the African market🤔

I did a bit of reading on this recently, convinced I should also run a 5W-30 oil. The bottom line is the engine warranty only covers LL12FE spec oils. The older LL04 spec was superceded by BMW. The only weight approved for LL12FE is 0W-30 so we're stuck with that.
I think the smarter way to go is to do more frequent oil and filter changes.

This ChatGPT summary captures the key points. It is largely based on reduced emissions. The 'FE' is Fuel Economy.

A C2 oil has a HTHS of 2.9 mPa.s or 420.609 psi measured at 150 centigrade.
A C3 oil has a HTHS of 3.6 mPa.s or 522.136 psi measured at 150 centigrade.
HTHS stands for high temperature high shear.
The Penrite BMW C3 Enviro+ LL04 5w30 oil has the same low medium saps as a BMW C2, LL12FE oil, and is rated at both C2 for economy and C3 for shear.
A very large Australian BMW dealership told me they use a C2 / C3 5w30 rated oil in all their BMW diesel's in Australia, and that A C2 0w30 oil is not strong enough for Australian conditions.
I change my oil at a maximum of 7,500km or 6 month intervals.
The higher HTHS of a C3 oil should significantly improve engine longevity.
But is it covered by warrantee is the million dollar question ? I think you could put up a really good argument that it should be.
I plan on keeping my Grenadier for a very long time, and there are opinions that with a C2 oil you will be lucky to get 200,000km out of a timing chain, but with a C3 oil far more.
Like Clark Kent I have done far too much research on oil and watched some of the same you tube video's and it can be inconclusive.
My Ineos dealer tells me that Ineos chemical is going to bring out an automotive oil line in Australia.
