Randomly came across these “custom built” Defenders and not totally sure what these are…? Are they taking old Ds and modifying / updating / restoring?

Starting price is 165k — so basically the price of 2 Grenadiers (depending on options of course). Maybe this kind of thing is well known to others, but I’m surprised I’ve never come across it before.

Bargain, I trust you have got your order in

There are several companies that do this kind of work. If you get a good company you end up with what amounts to a brand new truck.

It’s the American equivalent of a Chelsea tractor - a Brooklyn Braggadocio if you will.

It’s a form of “gullibility” test. If you buy one of these you end up on a grifter list for life.

There are lots of people making very shiny old Defenders, from the likes of Twisted in the UK and ECR (East Coast Rovers) in Maine and dozens of others. The problem is even after the rust removal, engine upgrades, fancy stereo and leather on the seats, it's still a vehicle that is hard to built without leaks, with ergonomics from the '50s and door seals that were inadequate when they were new.

My Grenadier spoiled me rotten, so my remaining Defender was sold wihout regret, (my wife was ecstatic, for her, old Defenders were leaky, slow, noisy, cold and broke down in awkward ways, usually on holiday).

I’m a long time defender lover, having owned 3, I recently rode in a very abused old defender in Montenegro when we went rafting, it was nice to be in one again but I am glad I own a Grenadier… So much more refined and just better across the board..

I remember buying a 12month old V8 90 CSW back in 89.

It was pretty good if my rose tinted spectacles aren't lying.

It could beat my previous car to 60 (XR3), top 90mph, didn't leak and compared to the mostly leaf sprung vehicles around it was great off road.

Downsides, horrific fuel consumption 11mpg, rust holes after less than 5 years.
