Petrol/Gas B58 Overheat at Highway (Motorway) Speed

Looks likes the plastic oil pump issues was only for a short time and has been corrected by BMW in the early 2000s
There are a number of interesting articles around about the issue from various workshops. The main issue seems to be heat and pressure cycles acting on the plastic oil pump components with excessively high oil viscosities increasing the opportunity for premature failure especially in cold regions.

All my old school classics are humming on 20W-50.
Crappy old school inefficient pollutin', engines, but they're still going!
Without thrombosis I might add.

The most efficient engines I personally own(ed) are the VW 1.6TD engines from the early 80s. Nothing new comes even close. I've never had a late 80s mech TDI, which I think is even better.
Ok, the whole cars are/were lighter, ran skinnier tires etc etc., but15W40. Good for 600.000kms.

I'm still convinced that, considering the whole life cycle, new designs can't compete when it comes to efficiency.

You could argue that the 1980 TDI producing 50bhp versus the 2025 1.5 diesel at around150bhp makes the early version less efficient.
