Petrol/Gas B58 Overheat at Highway (Motorway) Speed

Looks likes the plastic oil pump issues was only for a short time and has been corrected by BMW in the early 2000s
There are a number of interesting articles around about the issue from various workshops. The main issue seems to be heat and pressure cycles acting on the plastic oil pump components with excessively high oil viscosities increasing the opportunity for premature failure especially in cold regions.

Inefficient? Really??
The most efficient engines I personally own(ed) are the VW 1.6TD engines from the early 80s. Nothing new comes even close. I've never had a late 80s mech TDI, which I think is even better.
Ok, the whole cars are/were lighter, ran skinnier tires etc etc., but15W40. Good for 600.000kms.

I'm still convinced that, considering the whole life cycle, new designs can't compete when it comes to efficiency.

You could argue that the 1980 TDI producing 50bhp versus the 2025 1.5 diesel at around150bhp makes the early version less efficient.

No problem. All the spaces and gaps were larger, the engine parts less precise. So there is more space for the oil to move and higher viscosity helps here. My Land Rover 101 FWC uses 20W50 as the engine and LT95 Gearbox oil. You should not use thicker oil in the gearbox, as the pump really gets in to trouble when in becomes thicker in the LT95, and not an oil with less viscosity, as this can't cope with the load anymore. Same with the original Austin Mini, where the engine oil is the gearbox oil and vice versa. They had the same oil feed, change interval 5,000 km. That was due to the high shear load destroying the long carbon chains, making the oil thinner and thereby the wear increased.
