For years when I've been on a long expedition in my Jeeps, I carry a second spare in the event something unrepairable happens to a tire - I don't want to install the only spare and have to finish the expedition without a spare. It's easy on my 2006 Wranglers because they don't have TPMS and my 13 Wrangler is smart enough to recognize when a new tire with a previously unseen sensor has been installed. The Grenadier's TPMS system unfortunately isn't as smart as that in my 13-year-old Wrangler so I'm looking for a TPMS programming solution for the Grenadier. I've picked up an extra wheel and tire for my Grenadier to make up a second spare and I've been in communication with Autel support to see if their TS508WF will do what I need, which is this:
1. Read the IDs of the factory sensors by placing the scanner next to the sensor in the tire. It would be nice to read from the ECU directly, but I can live without that, reading the sensor data one tire at a time is sufficient for my needs.
2. Program an aftermarket sensor (Autel MX presumably) installed in the second spare with the ID of the failed tire.
I've checked the Autel manual for the TS508WF online, and it appears that after reading the IDs of the sensors on the vehicle, that information will be stored in the scanner. The manual talks about getting the IDs through the OBD port but I'm assuming the ID data will also be there if the IDs were read manually by placing the scanner next to each tire. I believe this to be the case because the screen shot in the manual indicates that if TPMS diagnosis was performed, the option to use that data for programming is presented (even if the diagnosis was performed manually instead of through OBD?). Is this correct?
A subsequent screen in the programming process indicates that a sensor ID can be selected from that list to program the new MX sensor.
Is all this correct? Am I missing something? My bare minimum requirements do not require interfacing to the Grenadier through the OBD port, all I want to do is read the sensor ID of the failed tire by placing the scan tool next to that tire and use the ID thus read to program an MX sensor in the new spare.
I'm ready to place an order for the Autel scanner and sensors but hoping someone with experience can confirm that what I want to do works. Thank you in advance for your help.
