Aussies-- Any Input Appreciated!

Yes! That’s where I saw them yesterday. We are planning on going back. The colors on those wallabies are beautiful. Wilpena Pound is also on the list
They are considered to be the most beautiful colored wallaby, but the Bridled Nail Tail Wallaby give them some competition. These were thought to be extinct for decades before a fencing contractor found the last colony. They are really rare.

Just got back from a month in Australia and would say kangaroo island was one of the highlights.
I spent 3 weeks and 3 days there traveling 3,000km. I want to go back.

We just did Brisbane, Gold Coast, Adelaide, kangaroo island, Perth and Sydney. Coming back in May and doing Melbourne and NZ. I have to admit, the people are wonderful, the parks are fantastic and the weather was stellar. Felt like old school America. You could go just outside any major city and find open spaces and parks galore. Very few people. Really enjoyed our time. Ran into a couple of grenadier owners along the way.

Some the iconic Aussie trips include:

CAPE YORK
Cape York (Northern Queensland), a trip to the most northerly part of Australia. During peak tourist season it can be very busy, by road. I was short on time, so I chartered a helicopter and did it in four days – but what a trip it was! Reports and photos here. I also visited AWC’s Piccaninny Plains in the central part of Cape York.

My motor on the trip, at Captain Billy Goat falls from memory. I had an amazing pilot :)

KIMBERLEY AND THE PILBARA
The Kimberley (North West Western Australia). A must do location. I spent about 7 weeks on the Gibb River Road, I visited Mitchell Falls, Derby, Broome, Mornington Sanctuary (sunsets here), Charnley River Station, the Bungle Bungles and the Horizontal Water Falls. When in Derby I spent 2 days in a helicopter in the Kimberley, including flying down the Charnley River Gorge. I then headed off to The Pilbara. The Pilbara is a must-see location (but often missed) including Port Hedland and Port Dampier. I started the trip in Katherine on my way to Kununurra, report and photos here.

THE TERRITORY
The Northern Territory, especially Kakadu, Uluru and Kings Canyon. These have become very commerialsied in recent years. So I chartered that helicopter again flew over Arnhem Land and Kakadu instead -the images are very unique. For me places to visit include Corroborate Billabong which has amazing birdlife and the largest concentration of crocodiles in the world. Also Newhaven in Central Australia here and here. When visiting Alice Springs make sure you visit the East MacDonnell Ranges, the West MacDonnell Ranges and the Devils Marbles.

VICTORIAN HIGH COUNTRY
Never visited the place. I am sure some else can add the details.

LORD HOWE ISLAND (NSW)
The most beautiful place I have visited is Lord Howe Island, off the New South Wales Coast. It is not a cheap place to visit (like any Island) but it is amazing. Australia’s version of Bora Bora. Information here. My images here.

NEW ZEALAND
OK not part of Australia but worth a trip across the Tasman Sea. Especially the South Island. A complete contrast to Australian landscapes (except Tasmania). Multiple reports and images here.

Some great memories in that post.

FLINDERS RANGES ADDED
Plus I just added Flinders Ranges and Arkaroola to that list, with images and links. The Flinders Ranges and surrounds is one of the best places in Australia to visit.

ARNHEM LAND AND KAKADU
I posted today, on my blog, some pictures from my 2017 trip cross Arnhem Land and Kakadu. At the end of the Wet Season, so plenty of water around.

It was in a helicopter!

West Arnhem – medium format style
When I charter a helicopter, a rare event, I carry two cameras around my shoulders. The main camera and a Pentax 645Z Medium Format camera. It is a bit of juggling act to take images from an open door of a helicopter and handle two large cameras. I wrote up some tips so I could remind myself of the best settings to use here.

The Pentax 645Z is not well suited to taking images from a helicopter, because it has slow autofocus and takes massive files. But the image details are stunning, when they work. You can crop then any way you want and they still have detail, detail and more detail. The Pentax renders faithful colours, so it is close to what you see from the helicopter.

No roads here, you need to walk or use a helicopter.

Arnhem land escarpment
Arnhem Land is up on an escarpment, both Jim Jim and Twin Waterfalls, in Kakadu, is water coming off the escarpment down onto the coastal strip.

It was impressive to fly along the escarpment and realise how high it was. This was one of the most memorable parts of the trip.

It is safe to swim up on the escarpment, as there are no crocs (we took a dip or two!). The Arnhem Land plateau extends all the way south to Katherine Gorge, aka Nitmiluk (Nit-maa-look), which means "place of the cicada dreaming".

A couple of images. You can see in the first image where a huge part of the escarpment slipped away down the rock face (middle of the image). The trees give you an idea of the size of the escarpment.

Try north and far North Queensland or north east up the top of Western Australia or top end - Northern Territory - for the real Australia. Cities are the same everywhere.

Here’s a short selection from my trip this week. Spectacular at every turn. Dinosaur trail north west Queensland following Burke and Wills trail.

A new update on the blog today:

Impressive photography of fabulous parts of Australia as ever doc. Combo of the locations, good framing, and having a 1.5kg beast of a camera hanging out of a helicopter taking the shots. Love it. 😀
