In the meantime I'm actually getting serious about home renovations. Its only taken 20 years..........

Spent the last couple of weeks under a '78. I should be there now but, you know, forum duty calls.

Still waiting for access to the manual.
 
I take it rust isn't really an issue in Oz?
I restored a '73 LR utility that had sat in the bush, in the lea of our rainy mountain for 19 years.
The only rust was in the rear X member where mud had accumulated, before it was parked.
Oh and the brake drums. Very rusty!

They may have slightly overloaded that roof rack! :ROFLMAO:
Most of them effectively have no suspension as so many leaf springs packed in there or alternatively blocks of wood jammed in there so that suspension can’t sag. 🤫

Clark Kent appears to have kept that at bay with a protective layer of dust.

We're not immune from rust but it's more of a feature in old cars that spent their life on or near the coast. We don't salt the roads in winter so that's not an issue.
This example spent its working life as a Government vehicle doing dry forestry work. It was bought at a disposal auction by an old guy who lived on an island in Moreton Bay near Brisbane, Qld. He parked it under his high set house and used it to drag his trailer boat less than a mile to the boat ramp a few times a week for a couple of years until his health failed. The island salt exposure caused some rust in the typical 40 series panel pockets and the roof gutter/drip rail is rotten. The frame is very clean. I bought it from a guy who bought it sight unseen from the old guy's estate sale. He was going to use it as a parts donor for his other 40 and 45 series projects but when it was delivered to him he decided it was too good to strip so he sold it on. It was still registered and I drove it home 400km (240 miles). It drove well.

PS: It's not dust. It's a maintenance free organic wrap!
