What makes the whine noise?

My Grenadier drivetrain makes a loud whine noise when I am cruising along at a constant speed. If it is not under load the noise stops... I think they all do this, I am curious is it the differentials, drive shafts or the transmission that I hear making the noise?

Being the engineering geek that I am, I want to try to reduce the noise..

I get whine from my front diff under power which peaks at 92kph/57mph, improved with diff oil change at last service but still there. Loan Grenadiers I have driven are don't have this whine. Will be escalating the issue at my next service, the dealer requires a sound recording to submit to Ineos for evaluation.

Isn’t part of the reason is the transfer box gear driven?

Well if you say anything on here enough times it becomes a fact :p
But yes, straight gear transfer cases tend to be louder than chain drive.

Ineos think it more an undocumented and no extra cost feature of the axle design. See the dealer bulletin attached to my post above.

Ha. I got the exact same thing. Exactly at 57mph I got a peak resonant whine. I just learned to live with it.

Then My front drive shaft failed and was replaced. Now I get the same whine exactly at 68mph.

Service center says it's my roof rack, even though it comes from under the floor in the front.

The loaners I have had do not make the sound at all.

Watch out for axle and drive line issue... Dealer dismissed my complaint as, it is what it is, till the car shat out a lump of oil.

I can't say what I'll hear next. Haven't had my truck for a few weeks. Rear main seal is leaking so they are replacing multiple items in the drivetrain. Spent some time at a Toyota dealer today. I am getting worn out.

Grenadier is the only vehicle on sale with a fully gear driven transfer case, and unless if you have owned a LR Discovery 2 or earlier LR product, probably the only gear driven transfer case vehicle you've ever driven. They make some noise - it is normal.

LC 70 is a fully gear driven t/case and without much sound deadening a new 70 sounds exactly the same as a 20 year old one with 300000km on it.

You are right - as we don't get the LC70 here in North America I didn't think to include it. That too has a gear driven transfer case.

There should be no whine noise to be honest. Just some faint humming. I have no modifications or sound deadening and it’s a 23 model.

I would check if the transfer Bowden cable isn’t rubbing against the propshaft and try go in 4 low to see if it’s loosens up some tension in the box.

I did the whole cargo area up to the battery box under the rear seat, with the same stuff you posted. Zero change in noise level 🤷‍♂️
Hmmm
The loaner 2025 truck I had last Thursday was so much louder than mine. All sounds - tire slap on pavement joints, engine drone, gear whine, wind noise.
I thought I got used to it - till I got my truck back in the evening and it seemed almost as quiet (or as loud) as my wife's LR4.
My wife's always skeptical about my vehicle "upgrades," but she absolutely agreed with this change. It is now possible to carry out conversation in sotto voce.

Did you also do the rear quarters? I did the left (last remaining) last Saturday, and added some corrugated foam in the voids. Did also the rear doors - empty steel boxes do transmit fair amount of sound, even when they don't contribute to it.

As a side benefit - the acoustic insulation may also serve as a bit of thermal insulation. Cold or hot camping in the Grenadier may be more pleasant - will know soon.
