I know, I know, first world problems, but I went down to pick up my California personalized plates today and I was within the renewal window and the lady at the DMV counter asked if I wanted to renew my registration. Without thinking I said, "sure".

"That'll be $877."

I really am running out of reasons to live here. At least is a cool plate...

I do not even pay that for my F650 in Florida or PA. But then again PA doesn't need our road tax money since they do not maintain them.

Registration rules vary in Australia. A few states have annual vanity plate “hire” costs added to rego. So not only money up front to secure the plate but then you pay higher annual registration fees. “The double hit”. In other Australian states you buy plates up front, own them for life, and just pay normal annual registration fees. Rules vary from state to state. And if you move tor more than 3 months to another state you have to register in that state which involves a vehicle check ($1000 approx), compulsory third party insurance for 12 months ($600) and 12 months registration (approx $800), plus a new drivers licence ($200). And you have to get new plates. So moving states with your vehicle is a $2600 cost, and if you move back to the original state or another one then much the same fees get applied again cos it’s another interstate transfer!!! One of the many reasons I hate the Australian state based system - designed to gouge you at every opportunity.

Traffic congestion, homeless encampments, astronomical real estate prices, they will tell you what kind of stove and lawn mower you can use, rolling brownouts and water rationing, Byzantine property development red tape, and protesters letting all the air out of your tires. It’s a slice of paradise.

You and me both. My wife and I have been looking in Park City Utah. There are a few complications with that because we have aging parents here in LA and we already have a mountain home in Lake Arrowhead but damn we want out of this dystopian state.

They say it is because they have a very large area to maintain and a relatively small population.
AUD$1,528 (USD$980 Euro$869.48) per 4 months or $382/month $4,584/year.
I queried it when I first moved here and they explained it was required to

• provide sewerage treatment services
  • I said nope, not connected, I have my own sewer plant, $240/year discount
• Maintain kerb and guttering
  • I said nope, don't have any - $72/year discount
• Collecting garbage weekly and recycle fortnightly.
  • Damn got me there.

The region covers an area of 7,125 km2 (2,750 square miles) - from the Gunalda Range in the south, past Howard on the Bruce Highway to the north, east to K'gari and west to near Biggenden and has a population of more than 115,000 residents.

  • Damn got me there.

The region covers an area of 7,125 km2 (2,750 square miles) - from the Gunalda Range in the south, past Howard on the Bruce Highway to the north, east to K'gari and west to near Biggenden and has a population of more than 115,000 residents.

Here in California that rate is about 1.2% of assessed property value annually. So our run of the mill $5M home pays around $60,000 a year in tax. This is in addition to 10% sales tax (VAT), 37% federal income tax, 13% state income tax, the absurd annual vehicle registration fees, and of course Kalifornia's very special gas taxes. We are taxed like a socialist country but we don't get the free services. It seems that we need another tea party to set things straight again.

Rates are based only on the unimproved land value here.
Not the dwelling value as that is completely variable based on market forces.
My land is valued by the council at $425,000 whereas the waterfront block across the road is valued at $1.1 Million.
Interesting my house and land is valued at $1.2 Million and the one across the road is valued at $1.4 Million with a useless structure on it.
I guess in reality they do need to run drinking water pipes over long distances and maintain lots of public parks, boat ramps, roads etc.
I actually don't want them to put in kerb & guttering or town sewer here as it will allow population increase, apartments, etc

You are taxed at .36% which is very reasonable and you are only taxed on land value and not the improvements. I can only dream of that here. It looks like your top income rate is 45% and you have a VAT of 10%. Not to different from what get hit with here in California.

I have to pay a willing man to pump the shit out of my septic tank , and another man to take my garbage. And`there is no kerbside recycling or neighbourhood watch.
Living in borderline 3rd world conditions (yet I have an Ineos) I can't afford a vanity plate.

Septic tanks are no longer allowed here so when they need to be replaced you have to go for a full treatment plant.

OMG that is outrageous Dave,

In Glenelg South a beach suburb in South Australia where I live my land value as it says on the council rates minus house is 1.2 million, and my rates are $2048.20 au a year, and that includes all road and kerb maintenance taxes etc, and garbage collection.
I will add to that there is no vehicle inspection fee if you move from interstate to South Australia, no annual vehicle inspections, and best of all no toll roads in South Australia.
