Talking nonsense and general waffle

I had the opportunity to step on board the P&O containership, Arafura. It was powered from memory by a straight 8 diesel two stroke engine. It was started with a fine diesel fuel and once up and running it could be switched to virtually a crude oil. Nonsense or waffel, but I think I'm close to the money (y)
Close :-). It's termed "bunker fuel" and is the heavy residue remaining after the more volatile hydrocarbons have been distilled off in the refinery. Full of nasty rubbish and more polluting than refined fuels, but it's cheap.... then again, out in the middle of the major oceans, governments don't seem to worry who's burning what.... 😉

I've seen articles on battery powered shipping. I'm sure it said they would have to stay closer to land. What will they think of next to save.the planet🤔
With all the insensitives you would think it was a money making scam by the big green corporations 🤣

Bad stuff there however, I believe most of us knew the switch to plastic was fraught with problems.
If you all keep going on this i will have to comment/rant but it's too early in the morning so you are lucky.
Only thing I want to say is look into everything before we decide on 1 answer otherwise it will be the same problem we have with governments mandating electric vehicles.

More to come when I am not tired.

ALL PLASTIC LURES!
I can't help myself, but I always start a campaign with the billboard, even if it is not in the media schedule. Billboards have to be the most succinct message, at over 100 plus klm or mph.

It's a big play on words but can be extended.
Next image, a turtle with plastic hanging out of it's mouth...put on the thinking caps, no it is not artifical intelligence(y)
A little bit of good old illustrator and photoshop, I'm too old for AI but I feel it creeping all around me

Okay I'm going to have my rant.

Plastic was not invented for.us to throw in hedge rows and the sea. Government chose to send to countries that dispose in the sea, general public choose to throw in the hedge then complain it doesn't degrade. Therfore what we are saying is that we want a product that we can dispose of irresponsibly because we can't be arsed to do it properly.
A paper bag produces 4 times the amount of CO2 than a plastic bag. In the UK councils in general do not collect polythene for recycling because it is too light and therefore does not make enough money, the government is going to enforce from 2026?, whereas they would collect paper. The polythene was a much lighter product and far more per vehicle could be transported than the paper alternative and therefore reducing the amount of vehicles on the road. When polythene packaging is used rather than cardboard boxes the CO2 saving is even higher and the Amazon vehicle would be able to fit even more crap in, so again less vehicles.
Polythene can be collected to recycle into other products, not necessarily another bag but garden furniture, children's playground equipment and other stuff. Heavier duty bags get reused over and over again to take garden waste etc to tips. If not suitable fro recycling it can be used for generating energy and producing hydrogen. Ineos is doing this.
Plastic was introduced when the world population was less than is currently is and consumerism was just a fraction of it's current extreme. When governments started to restrict the use of polythene bags for shopping the use of paper and cardboard increased dramatically. The paper and cardboard is produced by cutting down trees and we now need more and more of them. From someone I know in the industry told me they do not have enough and are cutting down diverse forests to plant single species trees that grow quickly but are destroying the environment and wildlife. Does anyone remember the palm oil debacle and the orangutan loss of habitat. Well it's going to be that and on a bigger scale to replace polythene.
When you are giving a plastic straw are you recommended to dispose in the sea.for turtles to stick up their nose? No,.we put in bin or recycle where available.
Biodegradable is pure evil and designed to deceive the general public. The plastic still exists in the soil and damages it if used by farmers on an industrial scale or it gets in the water. You can't compost at home, it need the hot compost by mass production but they will not accept as it isn't know whether it's degradable or not so can cause bulk landfill of organic matter. The Biodegradable from organic produced plastic is still plastic and just breaks down into smaller particles and has been found to harm internal organs in mice. If you use Biodegradable plastic it cannot be recycled and if it contaminates the recycling it all ends up in landfill or energy production when it could have produced new polythene bags.
If your bags have Biodegradable in them then they can't store product for long. All those bags used over and over again will disintegrate. Some companies pay for additives that make the polythene last longe, so it would be a disaster for them.

Use paper and your CO2 footprint will be much higher and the environmentwillbe destroyed. Use plastic, recycle or dispose of responsibily. We will still have issues but you need to look into everything and make an informed decision rather than jumping onto the latest bandwagon.

I can go on but the wife is shouting for me to do some work🤣

Good rant.

On a related point (UK) today's refuse collectors are known as dustmen or dustbin men.

Reason being was that all they used to collect was dust (from people's fireplaces). Back in the day, that was the only household waste.

I go along with your thinking and here in my neck of the woods we have quite a few players already producing the furniture you are talking about.
I was quite surprised when I received the hat shown here, that it was made from PET[Polyethylene terephthalate] Bottles

Kind of cool, wears well and stays clean (y) PET Ineos Grenadier Caps, calling Lynn:)

I live by the sea and near Australia Zoo who sponser an Animal rescue hospital and they care for sea turtles that are rescued after eating marine debris.

Sadly by using plastic bottles to produce clothing rather than natural materials the plastic clothing has to go for landfill or energy production. If kept as a PET bottle it can be infinitely recycled. Sorry, more green washing.

You are correct with plastic being in the sea. Sadly a lot of this has been in there for many years and it is disgusting how we have treated the environment and oceans. Plastic or any other waste should not have been systemically dumped in the sea on mass as has been in some developing countries. Rather than landfill the sea was used!🤬
What I am saying is that a ban on plastic bags and other plastic products just so that we can continue to throw our rubbish in the sea is not the answer. As we would still need to produce plastic for many things, including medical which has plastic bags for medical waste and non medical. Syringes and many other items. To cater for the current world and our lifestyle and medical expectations we need plastic. We will therefore be producing plastic. If you then decide to use 'an old fashioned' solution that is inferior and made from paper (wood) we are going to need a lot of quick growing, single species trees. The only places we have lots of tress is the rain forests. Other areas that currently produce trees for paper already cannot keep up with demand. By planting single species trees you will have a picture on a billboard of all the wildlife being killed by the demand for paper. On top of all this there will be a massive increase in CO2 if we were to swap everything possible from plastic. Global warming will also kill your turtles.
Solution is to accept we were morons in the past and stop using the environment for our own litter bin. Teach people responsibility and enforcement of idiots. What is done is done, and needs cleaning up in the oceans to protect wildlife. We need to go forward responsibly and not be a world of litter louts. The only reason we want paper is so we can throw our rubbish in the sea and not worry about the turtles.

I agree with you that what is happening is disgusting, we just need to fix it the right way. No green washing as all the companies and governments do ,but properly fix the issue.
