Indeed I was thinking along those lines, since I really don't like not being able to leave them on, and that is probably simpler than trying to fit an overlay to illuminate the vehicle's existing position lights. It would not, however, strictly comply with RVLR since the regs specify that "all" the obligatory position lamps must remain light. It is however a much better solution that none of the lamps being lit.
