Prayers for you Aussies

Will be interesting to see what changes come from this tragic event, I anticipate tightening of gun ownership laws being one. Hard to justify why anyone living in suburban Sydney needs six licensed firearms after yesterday.

The Yank in me would say, had that street vendor been armed for personal protection, he could have stopped the shooter sooner.

All good in theory , rarely happens outside the movies.
Meanwhile, an untrained unarmed local fruit shop owner rushes shooter and pulls rifle off him.
Who here would do that???

The Aussie in me would say if that Father & Son had AR-15s, bump stocks and high capacity magazines we would have 160 or more dead not 16.

It will be interesting to see what changes, this won't just be brushed off as just another day another mass shooting. Our society will react very differently than some others.

First, I would like to express my deepest condolences for the shooting incident in Australia.
South Korea does not have a gun permit system, which is why similar incidents do not occur.
However, even if gun permits were allowed, such incidents would still be unlikely,
because nearly all men have completed mandatory military service, meaning that for every perpetrator,
there would be at least around 300 people capable of confronting him.

The National Crime Victimization Survey of the US Census Bureau reports 61k-65k in annual defensive gun use.

I appreciated the sentiment from @LabRat reaching out to the Aussie forum members over the tragic events at Bondi Beach on December 14th. And @Steve.B reciprocating with a reflection of the events at Brown University just one day prior. That exchange was ruined within a half-dozen posts by it turning into another pointless debate about gun rights. It will continue to spiral from here and dudes will be yelling at each other very soon. The bodies haven't even left the morgue. Nice.

It's a tired argument. The constitutional settings, laws and cultural differences are vast. There will never be agreement so I question why it was necessary to go there again. Argue if you must but showing some restraint would be ok as well.

Edit: Wrong attribution for the mention of Brown University. Steve.B at post #3 not Shopkeep.

He/She would probably accidently shoot innocent bystanders in the cross fire and then be shot by police.
If everyone has guns, how do you identify a terrorist? The guns laws are very tight here (I have a gun license) the issue is the hate. Even if you take away the guns these nut cases can still make IED's or use their cars as weapons. The hero that disarmed one of the terrorists but did not shoot him did the right thing IMO, pity that he also got two gunshot wounds, one each to the hand and arm. IMO people here appear more likely to step up if they have the opportunity to help their community in dire stutations.

Perhaps we need a politics only forum where we can rage about politcs, gun laws, abortion and of course religion. /s

My bad, I should have kept my frustration at events like this to myself and understand - different cultures, different values. I didn't mean to take it off the rails.

Not at all, and that's not the point of my post. There's a time and a place for the inevitable debate. The story is not 24 hours old and our media are already stoking the fires because that sells news and advertising. I thought your message was thoughtful. It would have carried more meaning had it stopped at that instead of being a segue to another round of gun ownership debate. I'm former military and I was a shooter in an earlier life. I have my own opinions on the subject but it's a hot topic and this is a car forum.
Thank you for responding (y)

It’s just awful, My thoughts are with the families. This is sadly something we’ll likely see again and again in the west. It’s virtually impossible to stop, if they didn’t use guns they’d just use knives or swords as we have seen in the UK, or trucks as we have seen in France and Germany. I have no idea how we can fix this. The mindset they have is hard to comprehend. I fear we are heading into something similar to Northern Ireland in the 70’s and 80’s.
