Hello Team ,

Not entirely sure the implications of this but here it goes .

As mentioned before on the forum i try and do an oil change every 3k miles for the Gren .

Now due to factors and circumstances out of my control i pushed back my last oil change to 6k miles .

I tend to keep an eye on the engine oil temperature both during driving and when stationary after a long drive .

I have some anecdotal evidence to present .

Over the past few months the car has been driven mainly at highway speeds and for at least one hour each time , almost no short trips . During the cars life the oil temperature never crossed 102oC , on highway under load doing 79MPH (17oc outside temp) temp used to be 94 oC . I noticed this to be a bit higher than previous ( at least a couple of degrees) .

I changed the oil at 6k Miles last week no obvious oil dilution, it looked like 7 Liters came out , 7 litres went in .

I drove close to 800 miles this week . Mainly highway speeds. I have noticed that at highway speeds 79MPH , outside temp 27oC oil temp is now constant at 89oc . Once stationary it will climb to 99oC .

My question is what is the brain hive's experience ? Does the oil degrade causing the higher temperatures ? Is this significant ? Does this mean anything ? How hot have you gotten your oil ?

Again this might be nothing , I do not have enough data to support a hypothesis , but rather an observation that might lead to something .

Keen to hear your thoughts and observations .

102c is not a problem for modern high spec oils. I recently had an air cooled motorcycle engine showing 142C oil temp for a full day with absolutely no problems. I was way too hot really but I had no choice and running on a modern high spec fully synthetic oil there was no damage done. I changed the oil after and it was still like new. I wouldn’t have done it with a mineral oil which will really degenerate after 110c

Diesel motor
I found the ambient air temps did not greatly influence the oil temperatures (between 10c and 30c).

I think air flow has a greater influence on oil temps, and how hard the engine is working. The BMW engine runs hot and the oil temperature moves up and down a great deal more than my old Patrol.

Oil age does not seem to be influencing my oil temps.

I was able to understand the Patrol's oil temps better than the Grenadier, which can be mysterious at times (maybe the DPF burn off is the cause).

Modern oils High temp high shear HTHS test is done at 150C. Engine oil will increase in viscosity if there high soot and contamination loads but it generally decreases with fuel dilution and viscosity break down. Higher viscosity oil will run at very slight higher temps. Temps for oil at idle after working the engine will increase for a short time then decrease.

Tazzieman, don’t you have the oil temperature display in the off-road page with your petrol motor?

Wow, I wasn’t aware of that. It seems really daft to not have it on the petrol engine
