Houston, we have a problem. Its the CV boot. +Mossy Houston Update

Surely a design flaw of this nature, with the risk and challenges that come with it, will need a fix from Ineos, no ?
I think it does. Although I accept I am biased as mine has failed on a completely standard unmodified vehicle. In my case the failure caused secondary damage that would not have been repairable in the field, which is a genuine concern. It would be reassuring if Ineos Automotive could address this matter one way or another.

They replaced mine under warranty with 35” tall tires. 255/85r17
Tires don’t change the diff/driveshaft angle, just give the lift. I’m at 20k miles with no lift and lots of serious off-road, same joint w/o problems. But I do check it regularly and carry a spare rezepa in case I find it torn sometime.

The more the big man in Aussie has to jump in a QM to deliver a driveshaft, the more likely we get this properly addressed.
I'm afraid there won't be a fix for it. All we can do is getting familiar with the removal of the drive shaft and replacement of the CV joints

Credit where it’s due Sounds like Justin and Ineos Australia stepped up there. Quick parts delivery for someone with a ferry deadline. Exactly the sort of support you would hope for. Good to see.

Not to be overly pessimistic but hoping for a retroactive fix for current owners from IA for this issue is not going to happen. Before any government mandated safety recalls are issued far more failures would need to occur relative to the total units produced so far.

As best as we are trying to track through the forum, we don’t actually know the total number of failures at this point. However, we are all probably correct in assuming this issue will eventually impact all Grenadiers with some variability in mileage at point of failure.

Regrettably, it will require someone getting hurt before much more serious action is taken via a mandatory government issued recall. It seems for now IA is classifying failures either as a result of vehicle modifications beyond standard or misuse and abuse by owners but are replacing driveshafts on stock unmodified vehicles in lieu of other causes.

The aftermarket will continue to offer various solutions most of which will come with some level of compromises. The only thing which will fix this is reengineering the front axle geometry and associated front driveshaft angles. If we see these sort of changes appear on new production models in the future that is about as close to an admission from IA they got the initial design wrong.

Is there a thread that describes the minimum parts, tools, and ‘know how’ to effect a ‘get home’ trail repair?

The propshafts, aka driveshafts are made by Spicer Ayra Cardan, a division of Dana.

With that pedigree of names, if they can't sort it out, nobody can.

I don’t have a lift either. It failed on stock suspension.

Do we have a poll, list or some other tally of how many CV joints have gone to that great drivetrain in the sky? I need to get on that list. And, maybe that list needs to go to NHSTA.

Mid March, in preparation for the long drive to and from Moab, I had Mossy Houston put my factory springs back on and install the full Rival skid plate package. If there were any signs of CV trouble, they certainly would have seen it and said something.

Last week I crawled under the truck to see where I'd made use of the skid plates. I hit a couple of the control arm covers, rode my driver side rock slider a bit, and slightly dented and scraped my front factory skid plate. Nothing too serious, everything did its job. I do need to rattle can over some of the wounds before they rust.

However, when I reached up and around the skid plate to cop a feel... I was shocked to find the rubber had broken and spewed out its contents. Yes, it was the CV boot, front driveshaft, T-case side.

I texted Trevor at Mossy. He got me in and out mid March in a day, certainly he could fix this ASAP. No reply. After a couple of days, I called Mossy, only to learn Trevor was gone. Greg is now Service Director. The guy I spoke with asked me if my truck was lifted as Ineos was denying those claims, he conferred with a Tech who asked if my CV was making noise (it isn't), and then told me I shouldn't drive it and they can't fit me in for a week or more. I explained this is my daily driver. Greg has emailed me to say they will see what they can do.. and so I wait. I failed to ask if they had driveshafts in stock. They did tell me they couldn't fix my cracked windshield for at least 3 weeks when more are scheduled to arrive.

The backup in service may (I hope) be temporary as Greg just took over and I'm sure their is some disarray in service. Time will tell.
I had to have mine replaced at 45,000 miles . I had to that the truck was not lifted . Seems like an issue .

What size tires? What is your speed when driving on highway? 80?

Failed CV Boot Action Plan?

Since my Grenadier is under warranty, if I am away from home and discover that a CV grease seal has failed, or even started to fail (e.g. boot cracked or split), should I stop driving immediately and expect/insist that Ineos Roadside Assistance (Agero) flatbed the Grenadier to the nearest dealer (or am I being unrealistic)?
