As I was standing and unmarked and he was on the ground in the foetal position crying I think letting it go was the best option.
I was worried afterwards that he may have some internal injuries as it was a fairly solid kick.

Where in Australia did this happen, I wouldn't have expected this kind of thing?

This sort of nonsense happens everywhere. A few years back my brother who was on crutches at the time following a knee operation, was approached by two young thugs who pulled alongside on their bike, outside a supermarket, they tried to pull his small shopping bag off him. Wrong man to do that to! ex Royal Marine and pretty handy . The one still on the bike was shoved so hard he split his head on the pavement and the other was grabbed by the shirt after my brother had dropped his crutches and head butted across the bridge of the nose, plastering his nose across his face. They left the scene nursing their wounds whilst a passing motorist stoped to help my brother out of the hedge. They were the sort of ruffians that probably had another beating by their parents when they got home for not having any stolen goods to deliver.

Aerosol cans of capsicum-based deterrents available elsewhere are illegal down-under.
In their place, readily available high pressure cans of "creepy crawly" insecticide and, even better, 'hi-vis' marking paint beloved of builders and surveyors etc have proved successful according to anecdotal reports in thwarting wannabe young thugs. They fit neatly in the door pocket. Just saying....

Rare yes, but it happens probably more often than most people expect. Desperate people sometimes do desperate things.
And arseholes will always be arseholes. All over the world.
And in Australia’s regional locations there is a large contingent of those on social benefits with substance abuse issues, meaning it is just as much of a social problem is regional as urban areas.
Stay in the orange zone people, ever subconsciously conscious.
That said, yes, Australia is a safe country to live and visit.
