Never, I repeat NEVER! try to leave your garage with an open safari window while closing the garage simultaneously…

And no, I do not want to explain how this could happen!

Beside that I can now share the price of a new safari window in Germany. The good thing is that it is plug and play. You will never guess what the negative point might be. IMG_2947.jpeg

Definitely takes the prize.
Leaving a sunroof open in heavy rain comes a close second, something else you only do once.

Oh no!!

Go on then, how much? I bet it’s crazy. €1000?
If you want a roof window for 1000 € you have to look somewhere else. Maybe a cheap brand like Porsche would offer it for that price.
We in contrary drive a more exclusive car which of course comes at a price.

1380,- inkl. VAT

🤬

But leaving it open in a heavy rain does not give you that special supersonic boom feeling when 10 cm above your head a security glass scatters to a thousand pieces!

I have some idea, when my windscreen exploded over my head and I was showered with glass, after the head on crash. At the time I had my face planted in the deployed airbag. Made a nice big boom too, as well as snack, crackle and pop. But that as back in the Nissan Patrol days.

Damn. That’s bad luck. I hope they have one available
indeed they had. It has been a surprise. But would I have known the price I would have been in touch with a glass manufacturer / cutter to create one. As I still have all parts (and all but the seal is screwed) this would have been much cheaper.
And no, it has been stupidity in its purest! No bad luck at all!

I remember the story and if I recall well as well the pictures you posted here from the crumbled Patrol. It has been a highway crash with quite a lot of speed and not your fault if I remember right.

Does your insurance cover the cost 🤔

Does your insurance cover the cost 🤔
they probably would as it is a glass damage. But I do not know by now whether I will claim a refund as there are some variables that come together. It is a company car so VAT is not from importance. We would have to pay 300 € anyway. So its about 860,- €. If the companies cars do not cost to much for the insurance company we get a refund at the end of the year. So it might be better to pay this on our own.

By the way, when cleaning the glass from everywhere in the car I found that on the left side (in driving direction) there has been a lot of leaves and similar stuff hiding below the cover near the windscreen. It’s worth removing it from time to time and clean up before it becomes a muddy mess!
It can not be seen very good on the pictures but it has been below and behind the build in parts.

I would try sourcing the safari window through any car dismantle scrappers first.
There are not to many dismantled by now I would assume. But yes, with the knowing how much they charge I would probably think of that as well.

Head on, combine impact speed around 150 to 180 kph. Not recommended.

One upside is I now own a Grenadier. Other than surviving, the only upside. Although I am "popular" with doctors, as they continue to put humpty back together again.

I have left my sunroof open a number of times by mistake. For all the bongs and bings and warning messages, a "sunroof open" notification when engine off would certainly be a welcome one. Unlike most of the others that are irritating.

I had a Lotus Elise a number of years ago. Lovely sunny day, drove to work, parked, left roof off. Was in meetings in a basement office with no windows for part of the day and came out after work still in lovely sunshine to discover it had rained at some point and my car had a inch of water on the seats and floor pan. Had to drive home after using handfuls of paper towel to soak up the worst of it. A very soggy arse. 😂🙄

Exactly the same thing with me, but a Triumph TR8. I work in local TV and the storm popped up while we were on air, so I knew it was raining, but couldn't do anything about it until the newscast was over. Drove home sitting on garbage bag liners.

My favorite was when it hailed and I had the "privilege" of putting live video on air of my Miata getting hammered in the parking lot. That hurt. 😢
