All Time Choice

I'm with @Jean Mercier and @MattA. 1983 (last US model year) FJ40 would do just fine! I had a late 80s Toyota XTRA Cab truck (aka HiLux) -- the 22RE fuel injected 4-cylinder was amazing. 20MPG all day long, zero issues ever.

I would have to say 1996 LR Discovery. Possibly the best vehicle we have ever owned.
I have to admit, my 98 D1 was one of the most intuitive 4x4s I've driven off road. I realize this as I drive more and more different vehicles.

One of these, not quite available off the showroom floor, and this one sits patiently in my garage, and that’s not what Defenders are for.

But the world has changed. Today I wouldn't buy anything that has an embedded non-removable sim card in it (I'm not a fan of surveillance capitalism). As the underwhelmed former owner of a 2023 [corrected] Land Rover Defender 110, a few months into my ownership I was appalled to discover that I owned a vehicle that was designed to become inoperable less than 24 hours after the telemetry circuit had been disabled. Indeed, for me one of the most extraordinary pluses about the Ineos Grenadier, at least in the US market, is that there's no sim card installed to support always on surveillance. And, yeh, I really do use an old fashioned flip phone.

Freedom is under appreciated. But hey a lot of y'all love the nanny state (both government and corporate) so I'll shut my trap.
No SIM card that you are aware of.

Short of breaking out a cell signal sniffer I have a suspicion there is connectivity in the Gren. Maybe not active, but I really do think it's in there. I could be wrong, but I would never bet against it.

If the pinzgauer is your thing, some of the Dakar sized Tatra's maybe just what the doctor asked for.

Btw, amongst you 'mericans - no Bronco fans ?

Or even the original Raptor? I drove one across the US ( from LA to Boston ) a fair few years ago (maybe 2011 ... when it was still called the SVT Raptor) and it felt pretty solid and capable. Didn't get it off road though, was very much hard surface that the 6lt V8 petrol just ate up.

Try a Petrol Pinzgauer. Air cooled and a little more aggressive than a kubel. I had a 6x6 and it was a blast.
The thing is , I could lift the corner of the Kubel with one arm and with the other , change a tyre. And carry an oily rag instead of several of those German built can things.

Ok. This has been on my mind for quite some time so I thought I’d throw it out there.

All of us came to the Grenadier from some other vehicle. The what do you drive thread points out how diverse our garages are, but I’d like throw this out there. If you could walk into a showroom and walk out with a “new” as it was sold off-roader, what would it be? What I mean is you could time travel back to whenever, buy it as it was sold in that year, and beam it back to 2025.

For example, I would love to buy a brand new triple-locked 1997 FJ-80.

XJ

Defenders are grand, and the Land Cruisers are probably some of the best vehicles ever made. But I love the XJ for its honest simplicity. Plenty of aftermarket still available for lockers, bumpers, armor and winches as you like. Lifts and tires and wheels are all well sorted out.

If I was looking for something more classic - something to run around in, light off-roading, it'd be a first generation Bronco half cab pickup. I remember seeing one of these when in was in my youth, and absolutely falling in love with it.
