Whine or road noise

The last couple of weeks I have been using my Grenadier for a 140mile daily commute to site, mainly on the motorway and have noticed a loud whine from around 35 mph. I can't decide if its from the tires or transmission. You would not have a comfortable conversation with the whining.

The truck has only covered 4500 miles from when I purchased it new earlier this year.

The tires are standard fit 17" BF Goodrich which I have fitted to other vehicles and not noticed this level of noise. I have a set of the Bridgestones and rims which I will put on the truck over the weekend to see if the noise improves.

Question is has anybody else had a similar problem. Could it be a transmission issue at such low mileage?

No roofbars , no high wind , correct tyres pressure.

Previously there has been reports with a metallic whine where the Bowden cable (transfer cable) come loose and touches the drive shaft. Mine did this and easily fixed using cable ties. There should not be no whine from KO2’s, the only noise is a quite humm from the transfer box and that’s it. Other noises which are normal is turbo whistling around 1800 rpm and steering pump whistle at 5 mph.

I would suggest having a look underneath towards the centre front above the prop shaft first.

Also some people reports small stones on the rear brake drum.

Some reported diffs. Check diff levels. Diff oil should of been changed on your first service.

Hey Howard. I have exactly the same issue at the same speed. I took it too Ineos and they said it's the rear diff. Apparently they have replaced a few down here in Cape Town already, but I have a feeling they might not sort me out, as its becoming very expensive. They say it works fine, but it's just the "character" of the car.... thats bull if I've ever heard it. You can't have a phone call once you hit about 70kms. It sounds a little more to the middle of the car to me, but they say it could be the rear.
I also read on some of the other forums here that there is a "harmonic humming" sound coming from the drive shaft, and there are some of them failing. Could be that as well.... I hope I get my diff and will report wether or not this sorts out the issue. The dealer said it fixed the issue with the other cars

I believe it's because the transfer box is gear driven rather than chain driven, plus I think it's designed by Ineos rather than a specialist gearbox manufacturer who may have experience to be able to design this out. The whine and the speed assist clicker are the only things I don't like about the grenadier now I've driven in 35000km

I am experiencing a similar thing, drivetrain whine only occurring when under power (not when coasting) but the sweet spot for maximum whine is 90 to 92kmh. I can feel the whine through the steering wheel as a subtle vibration that comes and goes with the whine noise as I apply and remove power. I was putting it down to the transfer case or front differential, has always been there to some extent but seemed to get louder when I changed tyres from 17” 265/70 to 275/70. Will explore at next service due in two months.

Does engagement of the CDL change the whine at all? You can test that on a straight section of road without driveline wind up. Make sure your tires are the same pressure front and rear and disengage the CDL before changing direction.
If it's TC oriented it might change the sound/severity because the power path has changed. If it's rear diff it should not make any diff-erence. See what I did there?

I had the whine as well and it was the rear diff. Under load the whine became very loud. When they drained the oil (I did one at 3k, this was at 12k) it was black like motor oil. The gears were scored on the drive side as well. Replaced under warranty. US Ineos was great, UK was dragging their feet a bit. This was my post with video and pictures Rear Diff issues
