What three words.

Three words tell you nothing without the app. There are not even language neutral.

Lat/Lon has worked for centuries. Without any app, in any language - even Kiswahili.

Although you still need to know where you are - via a map or app. 😉
And a map, as you say, will suffice. And any navigation device or the Grenadiers offroad screen will suffice. But nobody will need an app 🙃 to understand where I am.

This three words thing is the most stupid thing ever I've seen: A marketing gag with zero added value.

But @emax there are many people who don’t have a map, and fewer unfortunately that know how to use them.

Think of someone in their car that just goes exploring a sidetrack somewhere and comes into trouble- they could very well not have a map, let alone one with grid references on it. But they probably have a phone.

I would hazard a guess that less than 1% of people under the age of 30 would know how to determine L&L, and I would also suggest most road maps etc would also not have this information.

On that basis, something that assists these people provide their location without this knowledge is very useful indeed.

there is also value jn how easy the three words are to communicate, with minimal misunderstanding. There is lots of potential for transcription errors in long strings of digits, especially with people who are unfamiliar or stressed.
for some, lat and long will always be enough, but 3 words is elegant, simple and clever. As well as solving India’s postal problem.

The issue with 3Words is mis spelling (at the receiving end) and mis pronunciation ( at the delivery end) in a panic situation. Especially with different dialects/accents with verbal communication.
The safest way is to give all 3,
3words, lat and long, and map reference. You shouldn't be going off the beaten track if you can't provide this information

Agree. Value in 3words is in addition to others, helps error correct.

Agreed it’s best to use everything at your disposal to give your location. Listening to people trying to give their lat and long Over the vhf radio on the south coast of U.K. is a good case in point as to why the Coast Guard ask if you have what three words also on your phone. People can get lat and long wrong also
what three words is becoming very popular worldwide
Kiribati is the eight country to adopt what3words as an addressed standard, along with Mongolia, Sint-Maarten, Côte d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Tonga, Nigeria and Solomon Islands.

Carry 2x EPIRB's and press one of them when sh** hits the fan! Like the sailor who hit that whale in his Yacht...

I didn‘t know until today this app. Nice to know.
But I am used to have my lat and long, too
In the past at my Suunto watch and IPhone. In the meanwhile on Apple Watch too.
2 years ago, my wife had a terrible accident while hiking in the alps, and with the coordinates the rescue team find us with the helicopter in less than 30min.
At the end of the day, that save the life of my wife. 20years ago without mobile phone, LTE net, I had to walk back 2h, drive 30min to next phone, and won’t be sure to find the way back to my wife.
The total rescue was about 6h , but this is another story.

I'm not convinced.
But @emax there are many people who don’t have a map
Somebody who wants to use the w3w app willl need a mobile phone. And then he has a map (e.g. google maps) as well. The least he would have are the coordinates of the mobile GPS.

Some what three words for the same location:

///урок.дилемма.присудить
///應徵.夜空.登場
المؤلف.الثري.كوكبنا///
///କେକଟି.ଲଙ୍କା.ଚାର୍ଜ
///zmazać.zerknąć.twardo

Have fun.
The entire idea is broken.

The same in digits, valid for any language.
52.52, 13.38

And sorry, if the coast guard asks me for the what3words app in case that I'm in distress at sea, then I'd ask myself whether they have a nut loose.

The worst thing is that they don't publish the algorithm so you depend on their business policy.

No way.

But each to his own.

Compass course and elevation only.

But the GPS coordinates are in the offroad-section of the central display as well. With or without a mobile phone connected.

Garmin inreach might be the perfect solution if you have availability to the clear sky. Pop the sos button and ask for help. Then give the lat/log and then what3words. But if your dyslexic you might as well start digging a hole.

No only degrees and altitude (if you mean the round one which comes as an extra instead of the Ineos logo)
Just FYI: ;)
