What is that drone?

I saw it mentioned twice in the new jeep thread, and it always perplexes me. At 2000 rpm, on the highway, especially under load the 8th (double overdrive) drones.

Now the motor is an I6, which ought to be smooth, and BMW uses it and the zf8 in everything because a base drivetrain that doesn't get complaints is what you want to move lots of boxes. I don't think this engine or tranny, or combo does the the 4 cylinder drone imitation in anything else. What did Ineos do that elicited this wonderful feature? Is it the exhaust somehow resonating with the drive train? If I keep it from shifting to 8, there's a little bit of something, but whatever is pairing up to create the drone never really comes to full fruition. I feel like going to a shop and asking for the quietest most restrictive exhaust box that will fit to see what happens, because I don't know how they did it.

Hello, since my vehicle was delivered in August 2023, I have been experiencing an annoying, low-frequency droning or humming noise. It occurs between 95-120 km/h and has nothing to do with other rattling, droning and whistling noises. I am not aware of any official remedy, neither from Ineos itself nor from a service partner. From my experience as a master mechanic with many years of experience with four-wheel drive vehicles, I suspect the cause to be in the drivetrain, more precisely in an imbalance of the cardan shafts. During test drives with the cardan shaft removed, the noises were reduced, but never disappeared completely (it's hard to drive without a shaft ). I suspect that both shafts have an imbalance. But it could also be due to the tensioning! Removing the front cardan shaft had a stronger effect. I wonder if the (too) strong bending angle of the front shaft might have something to do with it? As already described, there is little interest on the part of Ineos customer service in investigating the matter, giving a technically correct answer or similar. Has anyone had their shafts re-balanced? Or has anyone had one or both shafts replaced? (at best with success?)

I’ve just hit jackpot. I had small vibrations after my first recall replacing a transfer box casing. Ever since for the last two years, vibrations would occur between 1800 to 2000 rpm. Approx 65mph. I adjusted heat shields which made it a lot better but never got to eliminate the initial problem in the first place. Visiting my dealers few times, they said it was normal for a diesel and they denied it was any different prior to the work they did. 2 years later on my recent service, I asked another dealer to look at the front prop shaft seal where it was weeping slightly. Since they replaced the seal, which involves removing the prop shaft, the Ineos is free from any vibrations at this rpm. I call this a result after two years. Don’t you hate it when they sometimes do recalls and make it worse.
