On the east coast, where could you go for 3 days to have fun and be challenged? Mud and the beach would be fun, I would drive out from Colorado for that. Particularly for a beach.

You would be surprised...If you could transport your vehicle and then fly...we did it before children and drove the Gibb River road but didn't put that sort of time into it...a few weeks which it really deserves. We drove around OZ in eight Months, saw lots but some should have been given more time when we look back now...no regrets, great memories

THE KIMBERLY PART 2 (PART 1 HERE)

True, I took 107 days and did 27,000km. Started from Sydney ended back in Ballina.

I took 2 weeks to get to Catherine via the Dinosaur trial in Queensland, then the Devil's Marbles in the NT. Then on to Catherine which I considered as the real start of the Kimberley trip. I explored around Gregory NP, Kununurra, Lake Argyle, Wyndham, then a trip down to the Bungle Bungles, then back to El Questro for a couple of days exploring. On 1 May I had breakfast by the Pentecost River. I watched a Ranger drive across the river, got back into my car and followed shortly after, on the first day the Gibb was open that year.

I spent 5 weeks on the Gibb River Road (including Mitchell Fall Falls and Cape Leveque), then Derby for a week to get clean, refuelled and resupplied. Went back into the Gibb for another 2 weeks.

Back to Derby where I visited the Leper Colony, and checked out Derby's massive tidal changes. That day a measly 8 metres, but they can go as high as 11.5 metres.

Then I chartered a helicopter for 2 days to take me into the Northern Kimberley. Photographed some rare rock art, we needed the helicopter to get in (or several days to walk in). Flew to the horizontal waterfalls and had a great time. Then south into The Pilbara, Shark Bay, Carnarvon and the Kennedy Ranges National Park.

Then to Kalbarri for a week to explore. I booked a Motel room to get properly clean. I slept on my bed inside the car otherwise.

Fuelled at Geraldton, headed across the Goldfields Highway to Laverton, the start of Australia’s longest shortcut. I took a short break at Alice Springs (Motel again), then to the Australian Wildlife Conservancy’s Newhaven Sanctuary along the Tanami Road. Some really nice images for Newhaven here. Back to Alice and then onto the Plenty Highway and the East Coast, eventually.

I stopped at some rock people talk about. Looks like they were on smoko.

The images look better over on my blog, the forum software is changing the colour profiles and making the images look dull.

Well how life changes in a day....... this trip is now cancelled.
Yesterday while I was posting this my wife was having a routine CT Scan that she has every 3 months to check that her cancer problems haven't returned.
Unfortunately it has returned in numerous locations around her abdomen and 2 locations in her spine.

Surgery not an option so we will find out more next week on treatment options.
Sunday is Mother's Day and the doctor advised we should make the most of it. It may likely be her last.

This Saturday 10th May I start my trip driving the Grenadier to Cairns and back for work.
2,896 kms or 1,800 miles and 32 hours roughly driving for the trip up and back.
This is a work trip and I will be calling on customers in Cairns and Townsville.
At around 12 litres/10 kms I will use about 350 litres of diesel plus another 50 litres of local driving for around 400 litres total.
At around $2.00 a litre that makes it about $800 in fuel.

Saturday 10th will be a 5:00 am start and a long day at 901 kms to Bowen.
With breaks it will probably be 11 - 12 hours

Sunday will be a later start at about 9:00am and only 554 kms but lots of road damage after recent flooding so expecting maybe 8 hours drive.

Monday Tuesday customer calls and training sessions in Cairns.
Wednesday 14th May drive to Townsville, only 350 kms but road works and damage may make it about 5+ hours drive.
