As this is still ongoing I thought I should start it's own thread and not clog up the "What did you do with your Grenadier today?" thread with updates

I got the idea from something that Pedro has done. The usb socket seemed just the thing i was looking for

Switch Boss - USB charger

Prototype_1

Rainy wet and humid Australia day, so....
First prototype of the usb socket done - sadly had to mount the socket upside down to get the wires running out the top.
I think there is enough gap to get wires between shiny bit and the panel. I will see once i can figure out how to take the shiny bit off.
But that will have to wait until the humidity drops under 90%

Prototype_2

Changed the back to re-route the wires to enable the socket writing to be up the correct way

Running the wires

Had a bit of a play this afternoon to see if it was possible to run the wires where i wanted them.
Much like Pedro I had no desire to be drilling holes in the dash.

However...
Looking at my options I decided that a couple of small holes (3mm wire size) in one of the unseen supporting brackets didn't really break the "no drilling holes" rule.
As you can see, just above the chrome border under the shiny strip.
There is quite a space behind to run the wires, which goes all the way down the panel as you can see in the second photo
It will require wires to be joined after threading through the holes - I was trying to keep the hole size to a minimum so cut the spade fittings off that came with the socket.
This may be a bit of a faff to do

Test Installation

Did a test fit to see if I liked it.
If I decide I don't like it, I can just remove it and it will look like it hasn't been touched.
Ignore the crap finish on the printed part as I was using one of my rejects as I didn't want to mess up a good one.

Looks nice. I have heated seats (thank god, it was 2f when I left for work) so it's a mod I couldn't do regardless, but my OCD would have made the upside-down socket unbearable. 🤪
