Trailer hitch cargo carrier considerations for IG?

Daughter is going to college 1200m away. My thought was cool, throw all her crap in the Grenny, wife and daughter fly and meet me there and I take a round-about way home.

Wife quashed that fast. Not enough cargo space. She says a Suburban might not be big enough. She is aware there are stores there, not a very big room, and a roomate… I REALLY don’t want to drive a one-way rental. She’ll go to the local community college before I drive a uhaul that far.

My garage is too low for a roof rack, but I would consider a removable one- just don’t know about storage.
I guess I could tow a trailer…
I thought a compromise might be a trialer hitch cargo carrier. Anything special about the Grenny when looking at these?

One way uhaul trailer is your best bet. They are surprisingly inexpensive.

Depending on the load composition you could you do a cargo bag on the roof. Lay a sheet of ply over the rails. Spread out the bag and start filling. Secure it with a net or straps to the grab rails. Stow the empty bag inside and secure the ply sheet on the roof for the return trip or dump it.
If you don't have a bag and don't want to buy one use a large tarp. Drape it over the ply. Load up then fold the tarp back over the load. Make the last fold from the front to stop wind and rain getting in. Secure it with a net or straps.
You'll see a hit to your fuel bill but no worse than any other option.
