I have some great memories of that area, and the 50 switch back turns on the way down to Mysore.

Funny enough, I did it in a vehicle similar to what you are in @Logsplitter - it was in 1997, and the car was a Mahindra 3speed petrol 2 wheel drive from 1980 and had done 300,000 km's. It was all a big vague, nothing went anywhere in a rush (is it 40bhp?) and we were 3 boys just out of Univ on a 5 month drive around India.
