the onboard calculation is off by more than 10% in my experience.

I actually called the dealer. He has delivered 5 or 6 out of town. He said once it goes to red there is about 40 miles left.

I don't think I will ever and I mean EVER, go past 300 miles. It was really sketchy the second time. The light came on way early and I was seriously concerned I was going to run out. BUT, when I did finally get a chance to fill it up I still had a couplle gallons remaining.
