You're welcome.  :)

I'll wait a bit for more votes.

Greg is now a member of the GRUNT.

To make a long story short: I guess, B is the winner.

Will implement this ASAP.

I  have now implemented version B of the GRUNT.

For you, nothing changes as far as data entry is concerned.

Changes are:
  • dealerships, ineos auto and members are now grouped as categories
  • within google earth you can activate and/or deactivate the categories you're not/interested in.
  • you can activate/deactivate everything with one click (just click the entire 'grunt' node).
  • within each category, everything is sorted by name just like before
  • however, the sorting order has been improved in that it now ignores upper/lower case writing.
  • thus, the lower case entries are not any more at the end of the list but  within the alphabetical order of the category entries.
A new dealership joined: 'Purnell Motors' from Australia.

New version is online.

How about grouping the dealership per country?

No way.

  1. There is no such information. I could add a field in the entry forms, but the principle is to collect data fully anonymously. Everything which contains data similar to an address or part of an address could be considered DSGVO (=GDPR) relevant.
  2. If there'd be a country field in the forms, it would be necessary to have a drop down list to pick a country, otherwise we'd get a lot of garbage. Since I am not a web developer I have little motivation to implement this.
  3. Even if such a list would be easy to implement, there wouldn't be any plausibility check of country vs. coordinates. This is not a trivial task.
  4. If somebody looks for a dealership on the map, the country borders are visible.
  5. It is likely that somebody looking for a dealership will try to find one which is close to him. I think the map is sufficient for this purpose.
  6. It would clutter the structure.
  7. The worst thing is that the data is 'owned' by ... ? ... I don't know? I am a friend of 'on premises' storage which is the case for everybody which downloads the KMZ file.
to name just the most obvious ones.

BUT every dealer can add add the international country code to the Note.  Even the name could be abused to do so:  "DE: Krah & Enders". This would even kind of group the dealerships per country by sorting. But this would need another check against the 'DE' token and very likely I'd get a lot of bad entries which would garble the data.

I understand that there is more potential in it. But for an overview, to get an idea where the members come from, it's IMHO sufficient.

BTW: if this forum is phpbb based, there is a plugin for a user map which can locate users by ZIP code and country. It claims to be DSGVO compliant ...

This kind of compliance requires some kind of a registration. This is the case for forum users but not with my very simple concept. I don't want to deal with the pitfalls of the DSGVO. Another restriction is that there can be only one entry per registered user. Just think of DaveB ...

But if Stu wants to install such a plugin, I'd be happy with it. However, if two members enter the same ZIP code, they will overlap in the map. And this map is not usable offline, and partially less comfortable than google earth. e.g. no 3D-buildings, no directions ...

Arkaig has sent me a list of dealers.

Some things to obey:
  1. Except for the coordinates, where ONE comma is mandatory, please do not enter any commas in the data, i.e. in the Name and in the Note field. This is so because internally a csv file is created which needs the comma exclusively to separate the columns from each other.
  2. If I find the time, I will change this restriction in the future, but for the time being: NO COMMAS in the Name and the Note!
  3. Instead use a semicolon until this has been fixed.
  4. If you have new entries (dealers, whatsoever), please enter them in the linked forms. I think it's fair practice to share work with as many users as possible - otherwise I'd have to do everything alone. I will correct any entry I can in the future and that is work that needs to be done as well.
  5. The reason for the stumbling blocks is that I'm not a web developer and therefore have little idea how to make input in web forms plausible. But I have a solution in mind.
I have now processed Arkaigs list, the data is online: Lots of dealers in GB.

I've got two Ineos Entries which used the same name:

INEOS Automotive Limited

One was in South Africa, the other one in London.

Please note: If an entry employs the same name as another entry which was registered before, the previous entry is replaced by the new one. That way, everybody can update his own entry just by using the same entry name again.

In the case above the "Ineos Automotive Limited" entry overwrote the other one.

I have corrected this to

Ineos Automotive LTD ZA and
Ineos Automotive LTD GB

So this is now ok.

If somebody wants to replace an entry, use the identical name, including upper and lower case, and the exact same writing.
If somebody wants to add e new  entry, use a new name which doesn't already exist. Just adding embedded white spaces doesn't help, they are always reduced to a single white space.

New version is online.

Yes, I was an airline pilot for 34 years, and so I chose my nearby airport (Palm Springs International) as close enough to ‘home’ for GRUNT!
