Independent Event Grenadier Oktoberfest

I think you need one (event required) but I think you want one to listen to the group chat during trail runs. Important to keep in touch with what is happening with the group tour
Do you know if you need a license for a GMRS radio?

Technically yes on the license.... but there is no test and you get it online. Think its $35 for 10 years. Just submit your info.. pay the fee and you're good. I think the license is good for you and family members as well. You will need one working GMRS radio per vehicle. You won't be doing much talking, maybe none, but it's required and you will be glad you have it for info from the lead vehicle about whats up ahead and tips for certain trail features/obstacles.

Checking in! I'm signed up. I'll be coming in from the Ouray area. I'm trying to get a few Grenadiers that might be coming from Texas, New Mexico or central Colorado to come do a few trails and catch the aspen trees changing color in Ouray/Silverton/Lake City if anyone is interested, arriving September 28th. I'll likely leave Ouray Wednesday October 1st, head to Montrose to catch the Rim Rocker trail for a two day slow drive and camp for arrival in Moab on the afternoon of the 2nd.

I'll likely be camping for the event and would like to join others this might be doing the same.View attachment 7907361

Hi, My wife and I started the pre- rally rally last year to Oktoberfest, which was almost the exact same route. We think we can make time again this year, so we are planning on joining you and can tail gun. Do you have place in Ouray so we can come in the night before, or should we get a place at the KOA?

It sounds like people are thinking about trying the amphitheatre campground which looks really cool. Thing is I think (based on my research last night) that it is FCFS in Sept and you can't reserve a site. So unless everyone tells me different my plan is to try to get a spot there for a few days and have some backup plans in case. I'm honestly not sure how busy it will be and what the chances are to get a spot.

FYI, just off the phone with Mike Reed, who is organizing the event in Moab. Camping IS available at the Old Spanish Arena event area! Approximately 20/night, 25/night with elec. Toilets and showers on site.

I have stayed in Ouray MANY times over the year but always at a VRBO. I have been up to the Amphitheater campground many times to either catch a beer with someone in our group or to hit the scenic overlook up there. That being said, I believe the campground is open until October 7th, they are just moving to first come first serve for those last weeks of operation. Any early snow might change that. Of course early snow would probably close down the trails for use or make them treacherous to cross! I'm not worried about availability. The fall Jeep Jamboree is wrapping up that Sunday and I imagine most of them are staying in hotels in town. There are several commercial campgrounds in the area. None are fancy. The KOA is pretty far out for my liking.

The night will be getting colder, so if there are still fire restrictions for the developed campgrounds, I might book a hotel last minute. I'm anticipating camping!

You need the GRMS radios so that everyone can communicate. When you get these bigger groups radios can really help with logistics and save time and grief. Such as groups getting split up. If this is your first time you wont believe how organized these events are. Makes it so casual and welcoming.

This is awesome. So we need to reserve spots?

First come first serve as a misnomer amphitheater, that place is always always always packed. We could camp at the very top of the road 14 A at the trail head. The KOA in your area is very nice, and I don’t give that complement lightly. It’s got some very big group spaces that might work for us. Adrenaline is a few miles north, and have offered space in the past. There’s also plenty of room at the Rimrock or Trail head.

For everyone that is going early and meeting up in Ouray at some point from 9/28-10/1 (when we will leave to take the Rimrocker into Moab overnight), can we narrow down a campsite or strategy?
Options:
- Amphitheater (but most likely full as it is first come first serve)
- KOA (5 miles from town) - Looks nice... can reserve spots
- Rimrocker Trailhead - dispersed
- Ouray Riverside Resort - looks super nice but I can't honestly tell if they allow tent camping
- 4J + 1+1 RV Park & Campground- basically in town but only has 10 tent sites.
- Canyonlands RV park: has a big area for RTT and tents
- ????? post your ideas.

Let's lock this in!

Nothing yet. Was planning amphitheater campground above town but if we have a larger group assembling, yes we might need to do something like KOA.

Would love to have the company and meet new people so consider yourselves part of the caravan

I made a reservation at the KOA just in case. Can cancel and adjust if the group finds a better place.

I'm not familiar with Adrenaline, is the Ouray or Moab? I've not done the KOA before but it is pretty far from town. Not big deal if the group is smaller. It's just kind of nice to be in town for drinks, meals, etc.

BigJMass, are you RTT, ground tent or trailer? Your reply implies ground tent. I think all the "RV" parks in Ouray will be typical RV site. 4J+1+1 is RV only.

I think I will grab our MDC camper from Silverton as well. Not overlanding so why not be comfy? :) Ours is an East West. Seems like the arena campground will be where it all happens.

Tent camping sir. Good talking to you on the phone. Let me know after you make some of those calls to get an idea on availability on the places closer to town.

Itsdchz are you going to try for a site with power? I have never tried that to run the AC before, its always in the middle of nowhere all summer. Should be plenty cool by then, but you never know.
