Having had three Range Rover’s stolen in the local area in little more than a week, it has started me thinking…has anyone seen the keys for the grenadier, it’s a new design, a copy of another manufacturers key, does it have a metal blade etc.

On from that is it a keyless entry and start system or a mixture of the two ? Remote open but keyless start for example.  I can’t say I have seen anything about it tbh.

personally I hope it’s a traditional fob for the opening and closing. I don’t particularly have to worry about faraday bags then.

I can’t answer all your questions, but I do know that it is not push-button start. In other words, you need to stick a key in the ignition. I am guessing, though, that you can lock/unlock doors using a fob. No one wants to stick a key in a car door in 2022!

That sounds to me very much like theft on order.

So I don't think the Grenadiers are really affected. Besides this they are yet way too conspicuous to get stolen.

I take loads of precautions to prevent my Disco 4 keys being scanned, but I still go "medieval"  and put a stop lock pro on the steering wheel and drop the suspension every time I leave it!

Firstly 75% of cars stolen while unoccupied (not carjacked) are stolen using the owners keys, not a copy.
Grenadier has a standard metal key and a Thatcham Cat 1 security system.

Thatcham Category 1 – combined alarm and immobiliserSystems that fall into this class are the cleverest and most complex on the market. A Thatcham Category 1 alarm will feature perimeter and ignition detection, and incorporate movement, glass break and/or tilt sensors. There’ll also be a siren powered by its own battery supply that will sound if your car gets broken into.Immobilisers are also a requirement to pass Thatcham Category 1 tests and have to be passively set – that means without any action from the driver – while a minimum of two operating systems or one control unit used for normal operation must be isolated.

I think it should be pretty safe if you close your garage door and don't leave your keys in the car or just inside the garage door.
A clown near me lost an AMG G63 from his garage because it was only 10.30pm and he hadn't gone to bed yet so the garage door was still open
Thieves walked in grabbed his keys off the hallway cupboard and drove away

I can assure everyone that car thefts happen because of all sorts of things. One of the RR stolen was off the pub car park whilst the owner and keys was inside. That is a key reader for sure. Scan the key, replicate the signal and good by RR. This is why I ask what the Grenadier is set up like. Ignition barrel  ? Yes/no
remote for door locks or is it a button on the key or keyless entry. I can’t remember seeing an ignition switch but I wasn’t looking for one when I last pooped my head inside the cockpit. I hear the point about to new and  conspicuous to steal, which doesn’t hold water in my experience and certainly won’t hold water next year when there are more about…you/I will still have the same key/security system on our IG.

Just put a solid steering wheel lock on your Grenadier. This is a real showstopper for thieves.

Nice one Sledge, I definitely haven’t seen that before. Very reminiscent of a Land Rover key. By the looks of that there is a button to let the key blade out, so I would say it’s old school. No keyless entry or ignition.  Great ?

In one of the original build videos the guy states that they have a real key rather than a keyless start
I have to put in a key and turn it to start my 2014 Mercedes and don't find it to be a problem at all.
Hardly takes any strength

Agreed. And oddly enough I know exactly where the keys are when I get out of the car ? suits me, probably not the Chelsea tractor brigade who will no doubt be clambering after them at some point. we all know a roof top tent is essential for the school run ?

Will there also be a simple key, without any electronics? Because I'm a diver it's great to clip the "dead" key to the BCD an go diving...

An assumption only but I would say so. Always needed if the battery goes down. Can’t imagine they haven’t thought about the guy in the middle of the outback locked out of their vehicle and the phone is on the drivers seat. LR have a key in a wristband but that won’t happen as you need keyless entry

It is definitively a real old school key to start the car, no keyless start. I saw it when we drove at Spielberg/Austria and the driver emphazied it also.

Yes the Grenadier has a regular key that you need to put in the steering column/ dash and turn to start (hate the push button starts). The remote unlock and lock is good and probably the most I’d want to have.
I am still undecided if I like engine immobilizers. Another dumb ass thing to cripple the vehicle if a sensor or antenna goes kaput. Not being a Luddite here..but I find a cleverly hidden kill switch that’s wired to the fuel pump fuse is a much better deterrent. It also allows you to create a duplicate key (without any electronics) and zip tie it under the vehicle for emergency situations. That’s what I’ve done for my current rig.

correct. The best any of these in car locks do is slow a determined thief down. They just jump in the car armed with a battery powered grinder with a cutting disc in it and away they go.

In many parts of the world the best way to stop car thieves is to buy a manual.
Many of these young thieves have no idea how to operate a clutch and manual gears

You are right about a good old fashioned kill switch hidden somewhere. Real old school and have a quick look on YouTube for the vehicle barn find videos. How many of them are still trying to start a car after several days only to realise they have been thwarted by a hidden kill switch on a escort cosworth of some mid 90’s hot hatch. The modern way of doing it is what they call ghost locks or something like that where they program a specific sequence of switches to press in the car before it will start. That all sounded great to me until I heard that they regularly go wrong and no one can start the car including the poor owner who is left stranded.

Reminds me of Batman and how he had to push the wrong button to start the batmobile - the one signalled engine start ejected the bad chap tout de suite. going back a bit i know....
