I would like to see what a red roof rack would look like. That would, I think, look good on a grenadier (not all colors though).

I now have prices from Flatdog on the roof rack that they are building for me. Pretty competitive and it looks like a quality rack.
It will look very similar to the Defender one, but dimensions will be different. I’ll attach a pic of mine once its done. In the mean time a pic of the defender one Is below.

They are going to make extra deep claws for attaching the rack to account for the wide gutters on the Grenadier. This should make it stronger than some other attachment systems. They will come with a wind deflector and 8 legs. They are aluminium with tracks on each bar. They also do clamp systems for awnings and roof top tents.

There will be two sizes initially.
Full length 2535x1660mm. £1104
3/4 length 1935x1560mm. £900
I don’t have prices on the Roof Bars but if they are similar to the Defender ones they will likely be around £100 per bar.
They also said that they might make a full actual roof length rack ie 2735mm but that will need further research to avoid wind noise.

I can’t wait to get my hands on mine, but I’ll need the car first!

That’s the rack installed. Looks good, its strong and feels very secure. The gutters seem fine with the feet being quite wide. I’ll report back on wind noise etc. Weight is as best as I can measure 36Kg. I’m going to fit an awning and RTT now. We’ll see how that looks.29370712-4CA0-4DDB-8ECA-6702AFF1F642.jpeg0A6F56F3-97D7-4DAB-AFCB-C8331F482939.jpegAE93EB87-D867-4E55-B0E8-05E7C6EB0FF5.jpegAE93EB87-D867-4E55-B0E8-05E7C6EB0FF5.jpeg

A few more pics.
Happy to report no whistling noise at 80mph, and none with the tent and awning on either. There’s maybe a tiny bit more wind noise but you’d need a sound meter to tell. Overall very happy.
36 kg for the rack, 87 for the tent and about 20 for the awning, pretty close to the max roof load. Everything seems to hold up well.

The awning is a Howling moon 270. It’s a 2m one. I wish I had got the 2.5 m one in hindsight but it is ok. The quality is good and the integrated legs make setup easy. It’s free standing in light wind.

I had the 2.5m 270 deg 6 panel awning, you are correct re quality, its HUGE! and a pain to pack away, you can put a whole tribe underneath it. But at 38kgs its a bit too heavy for the IG form me

The 2 m one packs away in under a minute, and I think it weighs about 25 kg. The canvas is really good, we had a massive downpour while we had it up, no leaks.

That's great the awning material is top quality, the 2.5m 6 panel is considerably larger and has 2 more arms, they also don't recommend it for vehicles other than light trucks, I had it on a camper.

Check out the South African Eezi Awn K9 rack.
It’s got longitudinal slats as well as cross member slats.
Their racks have a good reputation in SA.
Apparently longitudinal slats/rails produce much less wind noise when unladen; something very few owners consider, until it’s too late!

Probably why the FR rack comes with a wind deflector

Tazzie,

You said you have bought the 3/4 Front runner rack due to safaris windows but may change it to the full size.

I assume to make this change, full size side rails would simply replace the 3/4 rack side rails and some additional slats ?

Anything else to change?

I am doing a Phd on racks. I want something light, strong enough, low profile, close to the roof line, can attach a 180 degree awning, either 3/4 or less than 2530mm (length of Rhino OEM).

The last rack I had (full length) I almost never ever used the full area of it (except carrying timber home from Bunnings!)

Hi GB
How’s the PhD going on racks? I’ve currently spec’d the Factory 3/4 due to having safari windows too, but could easily change if persuaded 😉 I personally actually quite like the design too, as to me it contrasts nicely with my chosen colour of MM.
Usually only use them for longboards and roofbox in winter but considering a RTT maybe from time to time. (Never had one before as we used to have a Toyota Coaster bus which we had to sell due to constant maintenance for COF here in NZ)
Any advice welcome and I have loads of time as only just ordered 🙄
Cheers Pedro
