Just over 24,000 miles and I’ve run into what I consider the first big issue over the last week.

Last Thursday I got back home after a 400 mile drive. It was late and dark outside, but my wife made a comment about a burning smell. Friday around midday, my wife said there were 2 puddles of oil under the Grenadier. I crawled under, and oil was everywhere and I couldn’t see for sure where it was coming from.

I called the dealer, who said to use Ineos roadside service and have it towed in, and warned me he wouldn’t have a loaner available til Tuesday or Wednesday if it wasn’t a quick fix. That process was actually easy, and I scheduled them to come out at 8am Monday. Tow truck showed up on time and brought the Grenadier in for service.

Tuesday I was told they were inspecting it. Wednesday morning they let me know it appeared to be the PCV valve not working causing pressure to build up and oil pushed out at the weak points. They also said on this engine, the PCV valve was part of the valve cover, so that is what would need to be replaced, but because it was not a common issue, would need to fill out a ticket for Ineos to advise on next steps before proceeding.

I haven’t heard of anyone else having this issue yet on their Grenadier, but did find a lot of info on BMW forums on the topic of this issue with B58 engines. Apparently, it was so much of a problem in the past that BMW extended the warranty on this specific part for 2017-2021 B58 engines to 150,000 miles. I’m hoping this does not become a common Grenadier issue.

I picked up the loaner yesterday, it was a 2025 model wagon with some weird configurations, but interesting to see/feel the difference from mine. The loaner had lockers, leather and heated seats, but no aux power, no raised air intake, and Bridgestone tires on steel wheels. The first major difference to me was no safari windows, which even with a couple seal replacements, I’m still glad I got. The second was the power steering pump. It was SILENT, no whining at all, which I am a bit disappointed about seeing how I was told multiple times it’s “normal” but appears to be “fixed” on 2025 (at least this vehicle). It does have the fox steering stabilizer, so not sure if that is making an impact to reduce strain on the pump (if installing a fox stabilizer got rid of your whine, let me know)

I’ll update you all on progress, but if anyone else has had an issue with their PCV valve, I’d like to hear about it.
