Duplicate Smaller Key?

On most of my previous cars, I’d have a regular non-fob type duplicate key made so that if I was going hiking or whatever, I could leave the fob in the car and just tuck the small key in my sock.

I’d like to do the same thing with my Grenadier but I don’t know if this screws with the programming like it does on some other cars. For example, the older Rover LR3s and some other LRs have some sort of lockdown mechanism where if you leave a fob inside the vehicle and then lock the car with a non-fob key, it can cause the vehicle to enter a locked mode (don’t know a technical term) and then it’s a real problem getting access again and can only be done at a dealer who has a fob programming thingy — and you’d have to tow it to a dealer. Several locksmiths told me this when I was trying to have a key cut for one of my Rovers.

Anyone familiar with this or know if it can be done with the Grenadier without causing problems?

I wouldn't risk it on the Grenadier. It uses a similar security system to modern Rovers. Leaving a fob inside while locking with the physical key can trigger the anti-theft immobilizer, just like you described. You'd likely lock yourself out and need a dealer to reset it. Your best bet is to just take the whole fob with you or use a faraday pouch to block its signal if you're worried.

I have had a dumb key made for going in sea but not had chance to try out leaving a key fob in the car. That is a bit of a worry

Just use one of these
Kguard K IPX8 Waterproof Car Electronic Key Bag
The bulge in my budgie smugglers is big enough without putting anything else down there🤣

No matter how water tight these things are i can't see the wife ever accepting going in the sea with the key. I have a key safe that you attatch to the car and she's not happy with that. Not sure what the opposite of 'nerves of steel' is, but that's the wife and I work round it.

Yeah…that’s the exact issue I was thinking. So you’re saying put the fob in the faraday if you want to leave it in the car? Never thought of that!

Hopefully CRH will hear back so we know for sure.

I use this when surfing, has worked well for a couple years now. Fits a IG key.

I can't surf, but that's what I am trying to do when I'm in the sea.
That looks really good and doesn't stand, especially with the cover, unlike like the other Key locks do hanging down from the recovery hoop asking to be tampered with. Sadly they don't ship to UK on that one, 2-3 times the price from the UK!
I have added to my Amazon list and will look again when ready to use one, thanks again for posting that, probably the way to go

I meant try it with your spare key to see if it causes issues. If no issues get a blade cut.
Sorry, I think we are both getting mixed up, I already have a dumb key cut that does lock the car, I just have got around no having to use it so far. Reading this I'm not planning to test it with the key fob in the car. The faraday cage is a good idea but I have found some are better than others

I have had a response from Ineos on leaving a key fob in the car after locking with a dumb key

Mechanical Unlocking: The key cylinder in your Grenadier's door handle provides a purely mechanical means of unlocking the door. This means that even if the vehicle's electrical system is completely powered down or the battery is depleted, you should still be able to mechanically unlock the door using your aftermarket "dumb key."
Key Fob Inside the Vehicle: If the genuine key fob is left inside the vehicle, but not in the ignition lock, the vehicle's systems will eventually power down and enter a "sleep" mode to conserve battery. In this state, the vehicle should remain locked until manually unlocked with the dumb key or electronically with the fob (if the battery isn't depleted).
Key Fob in Ignition Lock: The situation becomes different if the genuine key fob is left in the ignition lock. In this specific scenario, the vehicle's systems will remain active, preventing it from going into a deep sleep. This prolonged activation could indeed lead to a depletion of the battery over time. While you would still be able to mechanically unlock the door with your "dumb key" in this case, you would not be able to start the vehicle due to the depleted battery.
Therefore, to directly answer your question: no, leaving the genuine key fob in the car (but not in the ignition lock) and manually locking the door with an aftermarket "dumb key" should not cause the Grenadier to lock down completely and require a dealer to open it. You should always be able to gain access using your mechanical "dumb key."
