I’ve been considering a cargo shelf for a while and am hoping for opinions from those who have one. I always had the one from Bison in mind but I just discovered the mid-deck shelf from Diabolical and now I wonder if that option is more appealing and utilitarian. Thoughts…?

Awesome-buy one.
Although I was thinking of buying an upright fridge and don’t think I’ll be able to and put it on a drawer or platform with the shelf there, so there is that…….

Bison is the high one, Diabolical is mid-deck.

I have the Bison one and the side baskets. Definitely recommend them, excellent quality and well packaged for delivery.

I have the Bison one together with their baskets and echo those sentiments given above. Buy Bison buy well.

Mine carries the camping chair, Travel Buddy pie oven, window solar screens, paper towel, under car work mat, air compressor fittings, rope, spare filters and a few other things I cannot recall. Mine is similar to the Bison shelf, but was made by a Forum member. I use the shelf it for lighter items, with two exceptions..

Different option to throw out there... I had Overland Gear Guys make me their mid-deck cargo net but using their canvas instead. My primary motivation was load space cover but it doubles very nicely as a cargo shelf. When the car is packed out I get a second level of luggage on the stretched canvas, but keep it to lighter items like backpacks and jackets versus suitcase. Second photo isn't the best but it's the canvas cover in my truck.

It's also easy to remove and ~$100 which doesn't hurt.

Totes jealous about the Travel Buddy… although I may have turned into an empanada by now if I had one installed.

We have the Bison shelf. Thing that I like about it is that you can mount it a bit rearward to accommodate the OEM cargo barrier.

Bison fan here 😁👍🏼
Awesome to use what is so often lost storage space! In winter I can get 6 pairs of adult ski boots up there using some vintage Tetris skills 🤣

I'm in the same club as @bigleonski and @TheDocAUS using a locally produced design that resembles another locally produced design that resembles the Bison high mount design which itself is not especially unique. None are copies, nope. Like Sir Jim said to JLR: "When you build a shelf that is based purely on function and put a bolt on each corner this is what it looks like." Or something like that 🤔

One down point of any semi-permanent accessory like this is the loss of overhead cargo bay height. Yes it's a great place to put stuff but on the odd occasion where you want to load in something tall; like may that new 60kg (130lb) dishwasher I picked up last weekend, the loss of height becomes a factor in how you can use your vehicle for bulky cargo. Ten minutes and four bolts and it's out of the way but it's a consideration. Same goes for drawers. Any bolt-in accessory is adapting the vehicle towards a more specific purpose and that's ok if that's how you use that space most of the time.

Here are the shelves I know about, from any country:

ROOF SHELF (INTERIOR REAR)
  1. KAON rear roof shelf here, electrical console for shelf here. Paper Towel Holder to suit KAON Molle Mesh and KAON Rear Roof Shelf, look here;
  2. Bags from KAON for their rear roof shelf here. Unsure whether the bags fit shelfs from other makers;
  3. Get Good Gear Roof Shelf is here. @Kilchoman has one installed. Shelf made by EURO FLO Expedition Equipment and sold by GGG;
  4. Offroad-Tec Cargo rack here;
  5. Bison Gear Rear Roof Shelf (based in Poland, sends products worldwide). Installed on AU Spec car here;
  6. LeTech rear roof compartment here (Super premium pricing). Its a compartment rather than a simple shelf; and
  7. APB Trading's rear roof shelf (UK based).
