Hi considering bash plates for the grenadier. I have found two brands available in oz. Custom off-road and agile off-road. Agile appear almost double the price. Is steel that much better than aluminium?

IMO steel is better. Heavier yes, less likely to fracture, easier to weld if necessary. I have the Custom Offroad set. Well made.
