For what it's worth... I confirmed with a source, list price on a key is $468, or $315 for just the remote without the key blade portion
So the little metal sliver is $150 bucks?!

In the UK there is a chain of keycutters called Timpsons, (they also do watch repairs, shoe repairs and other stuff).

As of Friday, they cannot copy Ineos keys as they don't have the specification, so the dealer is the only real source. Best guess for Timpsons was 3-6 months.
You have to understand the only UK Timpsons we know about in the US are the ones in the old Rumpole TV series.

When I took delivery, I asked the parts manager to order me a second spare key. I figured as far as I am from my nearest dealer, I'd better have a backup. Two is one and one is none. I think I was quoted somewhere in the $700 range. I can't honestly recall. I took delivery December 26, 2023. I checked with them last week and it's still on order. The keys are cut at the factory, and are made according to your VIN. He told me when I ordered it that it would be a few months. That's why I'm getting one now, before I NEED it.

In the world of OE parts it is a strange model.
For example, many manufacturers get tyres almost for free, the suppliers know that they will make their money back as people tend to change their tyres like-for-like.

Historically the same for bumpers and door mirrors, the suppliers know they can charge over the top for insurance repairs to compensate for the low selling price to manufacturers. Less so nowadays as most cars have parking sensors.

I don't know about keys, but I would be willing to bet that supplier holds stock of keys not the manufacturer, they probably even do the vin number coding. This would give them the ability to overcharge as most people buy replacement keys as a distressed purchase.

I have no insight to Ineos' model, but gone are the days when car manufacturers have vast warehouses full of millions of slow moving parts. For most components not in stock at the dealer the product is supplied directly or indirectly from the parts manufacturer.

So not unexpectedly, these complex supply chains make genuine parts expensive. No doubt the dealer has a high margin on top included in the parts proce, not great for the consumers.

A few MONTHS!? That is sheer madness. What if you only had one key?

I wouldn't mind a another GFC (but a more protracted one) to just knock around a few of these rips off artists and bring a few costs back down to reality. However, since people keep accepting and paying to be ripped off, then we can only blame each other as a consumer.
