Mission 22

I didn’t see a link to Mission 22, so thought I’d sneak it in here. It’s wonderful to see people support veterans in this way. PTSD is SO prevalent, debilitating — and sadly, sometimes life ending. It’s still so misunderstood by many, and it’s often misdiagnosed or undiagnosed.

Even in this day and age, there is still a strong barrier to being open about mental illness due to the stigma around mental health issues. Because of this, I try to be open even when I’m actually uncomfortable about it — but then I ask myself why should I be? I tell myself: stop enabling the stigma! I’m not trying to make anything about me, but just trying to help kick down the stigma — I’ll share that I have PTSD and it’s deeply affected my life in ways I couldn’t have possibly imagined; bc of it, I struggle with depression and have to fight like heck against it. I have so much compassion for our veterans and they deserve every bit of care they need, and more!

I ask as a veteran who returned to the site of my experience with fellow veterans. Most of the veterans had not revisited their theatre of war in the past 45 years. The experience of reliving memories in the company of others who shared the same events was very cathartic and laid a lot of ghosts to rest.

I’ve shared in a way, sort of. As in sharing the experience with others, but not in the way you did. I think what’s especially validating in sharing is the awareness that others with ptsd experience the exact same consequences, long or short term, in their daily lives as a result of ptsd. Sometimes feeling numb, avoiding life or thoughts, shutting down bc it’s easier. I’m sure you know exactly what I’m talking about.

I can only imagine what it was like to return to the site where you probably saw unimaginable things. Only those who’ve been through it know what it’s like to live with those memories. And you think of 1918 going forward — the millions of soldiers who had to just live with the trauma, no way to process it, no help in moving forward. I don’t know how they endured.

We were young. We didn’t believe we could actually die. That was for others. It didn’t seem like horror at the time. The horror was for the parents and families to deal with on finding their kin had been killed or injured. I will PM you with a little explanation of how our recent return helped a couple of the guys in particular. Hopefully it might help you in how you can approach your experience.
