Hey y'all,

so I imagine theres more than a few people here who are experienced in the 3D printing hobby, Im thinking about getting into it as a way to support all of the different things my wife and I are into. She's pro photographer but spends a lot of time gardening and doing other things around the house, I dabble in HAM radio and a few other things but my full time "job" is YouTube / music and we're both avid cyclists, plus I imagine theres a lot of use cases for the Grenadier. Im looking at the Bambu Lab P1S, it seems to be the goldilocks zone of printers but Id love to know if theres other comparable options out there. I should mention Im not super interested in getting deep into the "open source" world of 3D printing, I already have plenty of things that require a lot of fiddling and attention, I want a printer that I can un-box, setup and go with minimal hassle.

Thanks!

I've thought about it for ages. However my house(s) are full of things I have bought but seldom use. Everything from quad bikes to fancy camera kit to drones......and loads more.....

Sorry, went a bit off piste there (yes, I have loads of ski stuff too,)

Bambu P1S would be a great choice.

If you go in thinking about it as a hobby, not an investment, then you won't be disappointed. Most folks underestimate the time it takes to get good results from a variety of print tasks, and even more so they underestimate the time it takes to learn any 3D design software that will enable them to print their own ideas. Both can be done, but it takes many hours. It can be very rewarding as a hobby, very frustrating as a way to save money.

I have two, a resin and a filament. The new resin printers are pretty awesome but ventilation and temp control are critical.

Ahh, yes I also have ADHD 😅 I know the exact feeling.

Be warned your Grenadier will never be the same.
Seriously I have a HD2 and love it.

I bought the Creality K2 Plus with the CFS and its always something to fix on the dang thing. Their customer service is very hit and miss and warranty is okay. I bought with intentions like you buy for hobby not production and don't want to spend a lot of time fixing. I'm now looking to sell it. lol However my project this weekend was kinda fun but had to print two just to get it to work.

FYI a couple of US states (WA w/ HB2321, CA, NY - but not GA) are working on a partial 3D printer sales ban because they may be used to build gun parts. This appears to be bankrolled by a company called Print & Go which makes software for a handful of printers that prevents you from printing anything that it considers a firearm part, plus reports you

Why this is relevant: buy now, buy spares, and archive the software you want to use as getting the printer you want may be more difficult in the future

As I was scrolling, came past the first image and was wondering that's an odd place to put a coat hanger!

Surely this can be real. 3d printing by filament deposit is as basic a thing as burning a candle.

The efforts I see are to report gun parts or similar items if downloaded or printed, not restrict buying the printers themselves…but the “report what you’re printing” fact is definitely a real thing and disturbing.

I bought a printer, and can’t seem to find the time to use it well. I’ve printed some basics I found online but haven’t figured out how to design stuff, so it sits there in my basement.

How would anyone even know? The word 'reporting' implies something is connected in someway ?

Have you tried using some of these news AI things to make life easier? Just tell it what you want and it will give you something annoyingly similar.

It’s my understanding that the file is reported when downloaded or printed and the printer is connected. Certain states of ours create laws that require blocking and reporting software to be included or the printer cannot be sold. There’s a big case of a company not residing in the state, being charged by that state, despite a disclaimer that their files were not to be downloaded in that state. Absurd? Absolutely. But here we are.

I’ve not tried printing lately, as my time to devote and design is so small. I’ve not tried the AI thing. Perhaps I’ll try this.

Well, the last cad I bought 100% native was Autocad 2000. Just make it so the programming needs to be online to operate, and what you make will be reported.

Everything is a license and fee for reoccurring revenue, you don't buy anything and truly own it anymore. I hear some automobile options will soon be fee based, like heated seats.

This was my challenge as well. Now I have it so I can tell Mr Claude to give me the 3d printable STL file for a phone mount in the car. Then I tell it where to design the bolts in and out gets me what I nearly mostly kinda wanted!
