I’m looking to buy a summer wheelset oriented toward road driving (I’ll have an off-road 4-season set to swap when going off-road).
I’m considering the Michelin Defender XLT M/S2 116S. I wonder of any of you tried these and how they performed? Are they tough enough or should I get the 123 loading rating instead ?
Thank you for any insights on the topic, I’m a bit confused by different theories read in the web/discussed with friends.

The Defender's will not let you down, good tire all around. A bit pricey but worth it in my mind. It might be different labels in CA but I assume you mean the Defender LTX M/S 2

LTX M/S are great tires all around. They are surprisingly good on sand, snow, and rocks - and, obviously, they suck in mud. They last for an incredibly long time - several sets I had developed sidewall cracks due to UV exposure before they wore out.
