I’m in Southern India and it’s not like that down here. Seems reasonable clean , organised and modern compared to the India of old that I travelled in before.
I've never been but I'm going by what others have written e.g. Simon Reeve. He was horrifed, and that's saying something. But I guess it is what it is in some nations.

Each Indian state is very different. In Kerela, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu its very different to Mahdya Pradesh and Rajasthan for instance which are way more chaotic and populated. There seems to be no conception of personal space which is tiring. Go up to the North east and Darjeeling and its way different again with people similar to Nepalese and way more relaxed.
Varanasi on the Ganges is as you say though
Everything floating in the river inc burning bodies and people bathing in the holy waters. Once of seeing that was enough for me 30 years ago.

Look at this poor little dog. Up in the Nilgiri mountains between Kerela and Tamil Nadu, India. We had stopped at a stall to eat banana fritters and drink masala tea. I asked the lady who owned the stall about the dog and she confirmed it was a street dog and it was friendly and no rabies ! You can’t be too sure in these parts ! Anyway first I bought the poor dog an omelette which he devoured quickly. Then I bought a plate of noodles which I shared with another dog that was known by the owner and in better condition.
