Corrosion

Bit hard to home repair powder coating on items that get dinged and scratched through normal wear and tear. Sliders, steps, underbody protection.

True, but in the cases cited above and that of many others here in the UK the powder coatings were that poorly applied that it flaked off without the assistance of dings and scratches.

The same phenomenon was typical of later [TD5 on] classic Defenders. I lost count of the times I had side bars/steps, mudflap brackets, headlamp bezels and sundry other poorly powder coated bits replaced under warranty on various Defenders.
Was worse with pre-TD5s here in the States... INTERIOR seat belt brackets in my Station Wagon were corroding in the second winter; flaking powdercoating on all brush lamp guards; and dealers replaced the doors in the first three years under warranty (for oxidation).

My kid's 2006 Volvo xc70 with 250k miles is as clean as can be after 20 Vermont winters - sheet metal and hardware. It's all about the quality of the steel, me thinks.
