Roof Racks and Roof Tents

Currently looking for a roof rack and a hard shell roof tent for a grenadier. Any recommendations?
I’m currently looking at a tuff trec overland mk3 hard top plus side awning. A mate has used it for a couple of years and there’s a “deal to be done”.
Have you thought about how youre going to mount one? On a rack, or cross rails/bars. I’m looking at cross bars but I’m struggling to know what the load rating of them is direct from Ineos..

the tuff trec is about 85kgs plus the weight of the awning and I believe the roof loading is c 360kg static. The rails have a dynamic loading of 95kg so it’s tight.. Perhaps a third one for added security.

what‘s your plan?

I've mentioned on another thread I've bought the 3/4 Frontrunner rack to give me room for a RTT and awning/side walls.
And so as not to obstruct the safari windows.

Tazzie.

apologies if you mentioned before.....but have you previously used a RTT setup & is your wife comfortable with it or is it primarily just you?

I have always been a tent on the ground man but considering a RTT option.

Recently watched Ronny Dahl's tent v swag v RTT video:

We have a softshell Darche RTT with awning sides, and a swag and a 270 Darche awning with sides.
And it's likely we'll be investing in an hybrid camper next year.
Different horses for different courses!

We have the Crua AER on a flat dog rack. Its very well built..

Sorry I thought I responded to this a while ago. My plan is to get a roof rack not bars and hopefully one that I can use on the grenadier, defender 90 (if possible), defender 110, and my sisters Pajero. If one exists that would be my preference so it gets more use and have more options depending on what the trip would be like so the vehicle can also match. For the tent I’m looking at something like a Felton Hawks Nest. It would have to be a hard shell RTT because its just far faster and easier than soft shell tents.

The Flatdog one would fit on a 110 defender. It would be wide on the defender though. It might fit on a pajero but i don’t know.

Hello together,

I am looking for a roof rack for my Grenadier. I have read that attaching it to the rain gutter (e.g. Rhino) is prone to cracking and it is therefore recommended to attach it to the handle bars on the roof (e.g. Black Sheep). This would also have the advantage that the load would be better distributed and the weight would be more on the B and C pillars and not on the rain gutter. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Having done a few thousand miles with the Flatdog rack on fully loaded I don’t think the gutters are an issue. The images posted on line showing bending gutters with a different rack must have been caused by incorrect fitting or something. I rocked the car side to side with my whole weight whilst there was 150 kg on the roof. I couldn’t get them to flex at all. The Flatdog legs are quite wide and can be adjusted to the centre rather than the edge of the gutter. I don’t think it’s an issue.

A chum of mine is flogging this tent and awning. Both tuff trek .. it’s had two years of use, any views on what they’d be worth. It’s the aluminium hard shell type with wired electrical 12v sockets and lighting.

Guess I will go with a roof rack from black sheep and a tent from ikamper. Looks Nice and clean, quality seems to be fine and an okayish price.

Going to bump this.

I‘ve never used a RTT but I think they’re both practical and awesome. The Mrs. Has no interest in using it - so I expect to use it solo - but it seems perfect for solo travel.

I‘ve seen a few videos on the Ikamper BDV and I‘m very interested. Is anyone familiar with these?

If you want something for just you....

I don’t have any experience with the BDV but have the full size iKamper. The ease of setting up and using is wonderful. Something about pulling into your camping location, popping two latches and giving it a subtle push up and being virtually done is so nice. Plus the quality and built in sleeping pad just make it a nice experience. Growing up sleeping in tents and sleeping bags and coming to the RTT almost makes it seem like cheating sleeping in something so luxurious.

The only caveat I’ll throw out is once your camp is set up you’re locked in. There’s no setting up camp and then driving off to explore elsewhere. So there’s some trade off but I won’t go back. Just wish I had the time to use it more. Regarding the BDV I’d go with the two person model even if I was just planning on camping solo. The extra space to stretch out and bring more up would be a plus.
