I've always changed oil hot. Just off scalding sometimes. Wear 2 pairs of gloves and move quickly!
I installed an aftermarket tap valve on the main tank of my old 911 . So easy , no mess,

I understand that but the engine service practice is to drain the oil from the dipstick so they wouldn't touch the sump plug
I haven't found any information on that, though hI've only seen the oil drained from petrol ones online and this has been via the sump plug. And via the sump plug for the diesel in BMW applications. A sump plug crush washer is included with the BWM filter replacement kit too suggesting the sump plug has to come out as part of the drain.

Most oils are drained warm or hot. The car goes from the carpark to the rack the contaminates unless large or heavy will be suspended in the oil and the majority will drain with the oil proven by good oil sampling methods. If there is that much contamination that it settles in the sump before a cold drain it is very unlikely the the contaminants will drain with the oil as there is all ways some residual oil left in the sump. Very few vehicles are drained in a workshop stone cold or have been sitting overnight in the shop. Oil filters sit high for ease of servicing. An oil filter in every modern car engine is full flow so the first place the oil goes is through is the oil filter straight after the oil pump before going through the engine only bypass oil from a blocked filter or very cold high viscosity oil will go directly into an engine lubrication system without filtration. It also pays to start a turbo engine that has been sitting overnight prior to a service to lubricate the turbo (extends turbo life) so that it does have some lubrication prior to the new oil charging the system and new filter that may take a few seconds for some engines.
I didn't mean cold cold, but after the engine has rested for a bit for oil to drain dow from the head etc.

your sump plug has been opened at least once . the factory plug has an aluminum crash washer . you obviously have a copper there so someone pulled the sump plug at somepoint .

Interesting, I haven't been able to find any pictures of an unopened sump but the OEM (from BMW) oil filter replacement kit comes with a copper crush washer, as do most 3rd party kits. It appears there is a couple of different filters used in the B57 with AUS and EU using different ones, part number and manufacture location at least, though I'd assume they are interchangeable and they could use different crush washers depending on market.

I've bought a Ryco oil filter kit to have my service redone by an independent, it was their recommendation having worked on these engines in BWMs, they said the BMW filter can disintegrate when you goto remove it and a quick search of the net backed up this claim. They also said Ryco guarantees their filters to be OEM quality or better so will cover damage done to the engine if something fails and it's found to be the fault of their oil filter which gives confidence.

There's also a good thread in this forum that looks at the available filter options in AUS (as well as showing the 2 different BMW options depending on market) and gives a review of each, Ryco were the only one to provide a filter rating, thanks to @TheDocAUS for putting this (and a lot more information) together!

Bit hard to make out what's going on as your sump is so clean while mine is filthy but if your crush washer is alloy it also has a larger external diameter (assuming it's the lighter coloured metal between the bolt and sump casting), it almost fills out the area from the bolt to the raised (or lowered given it's the underside) ring around the bottom of the sump casting where as the copper one only fills out the bolt area.

The copper washer in mine has an outside diameter similar to the bolt diameter, not the entire sump casting opening. Appears to be the same as the OEM BMW replacement and also the same as the Ryco replacement I have.

Will be interesting to see what filter comes out of it as I've been charged $80.95 for a genuine BMW filter plus $10 for a crush washer, though the BMW filter kit comes with the washer and is available from a BMW dealer for ~$50.

That's a proper "gouge"price:mad:
I bought mine from the Bris. Ineos dealer...the genuine filter "kit" $40 plus a few cents, everything including crush washer in the box... they're certainly doing the brand no favours. A call to Glenn Boyd at head office is certainly warranted...

I'm going to try to forget about this for the next week while I wait for the service to be redone by an independent (I've provided them with a full checklist and specs I found on this forum), who will also provide a report on what they believe has/hasn't been done and the quality of work with all consumables and fluids provided by myself.

The fact the agent wasn't able to notice a rather significant leak from the gearbox sump which should be repaired under warranty does't give men much confidence though! My independent noticed this when they did the solar install earlier in the year and noted it on my invoice as something to have looked at, unfortunately I didn't read the invoice so was unaware of it until I looked under the car myself a few months later...

The original crush washer is the alloy one on the right. Just in the process of changing the oil. What a cathartic "Freudian" experience that is!!! After lying under the vehicle and then arising like Lazarus...well let's say the world spins... must be an age thing....that and the blood pressure meds...🤣

Glad you enjoyed getting under the car, I certainly didn't. While there's reasonable clearance, enough to squeeze under, the fronts/sides, and there's a bit more in the centre section, I didn't find it too too pleasant at a mental level, I was looking forward to getting out of a confined space, standing up and having the world spin for me :) Much prefer working under a car on a hoist/ramps/stands!

Your filter photo almost asks more questions than it does provide answers though! I've been through the thread @TheDocAUS posted regarding filters plenty of times and your filter appears to have come from Tunisia (EU market) while AUS ones apparently come from Mexico. I don't know where the filter in my car came from (never saw it) or where BMW replacements in AUS are manufactured but the Ryco I have was made in Bulgaria.


Is there a mix of filters getting delivered to AUS (both factory fitted and as replacements)? And is there a mix of crush washers being used, noting the OEM BMW filter kits come with copper ones?

FYI, my car was one of the first to be delivered to AUS, 2nd customer car in SA I believe, back in AUG last year (though had to wait until early SEP for handover while waiting on side repeater lights) so maybe there's some variation?

I called that number and I went to the overseas call centre and received fantastic service.
A guy called Mark answered, sounded like he was 45-55 years old.
He was calm and extremely helpful.
That was on a Friday and he called me back mon Sunday afternoon my time with a result.
