High Temperature Coolant Reservoir Failure

Checked the tank after driving to work this morning. The JB Weld patch job did not fully stop the leak. It may have worked on part of it; hard to tell.
I think JB could be a get you out of the hills type of fix, but it will never fully seal the two tank halves.

I hope AlliSport comes out with tanks.

How much coolant loss are folks experiencing and how often are you topping off? I carry a couple quarts of oil just in case I need to top off in the field, but now im thinking i may need to add coolant to my spares list just in case.
I keep a 20oz. Plastic bottle of 50:50 mix in the vehicle. Once the system is bled it doesn’t really consume coolant. I had my tanks replaced a few weeks ago and had to top up once - less than 10 ounces between the two tanks.

Awesome thanks! I have a couple of bottles around and will do the same.

I am on my third (installed at 18k mi), not optimistic. The possible Allisport option is interesting.

How long did your first two last?
Bought used at 7k mi and dealer noticed upon initial inspection while in for warranty/recall items. Not sure how long it was leaking prior. First replacement was installed at 11k due to parts delay. Noticed an active leak again at 18k, replaced immediately by another dealer who had a couple on hand.

I’ll check it again tomorrow, currently at around 22k.

This just seems like a ridiculous problem to continue dealing with. Ineos and BMW know this is an issue - clearly. Unless I am missing something, there is a simple solution to it all. I would like to know what conversations are occurring between Ineos and BMW. These tanks go on back order so they are continuing to produce them with the same flawed process.

It's a BMW issue, meaning BMW owners complain about the plastic welds and the leaking from the tank. Google BMW expansion tank leak, and dive in

Is the tank in the Ineos the same as a specific BMW part, or is it unique to Ineos but designed by BMW?

If the former, anyone know the part number?

It is the way they are produced which is the same for all of the BMW versions of the high pressure design. My M8 has had two before I went full billet. The Soy plastic glue they use to hold them together simply doesn't last long or isn't enough. BMW switch producers I think three times total thus far. Sadly it is confirmed the current aftermarkets will need modification for mounting points to fit the Grenny. I've seen three so far and none will bolt directly in without creating a mount. It's not impossible and there are more aftermarket ones out there so maybe one is close enough just the shop I work with only had a handful on hand.

An aluminum tank will clearly be the best long-term solution.

I was just thinking that with me being far enough away from a dealer, I just wanted to have a few spare plastic tanks if mine start leaking again. The replacement process seems like it should be fairly straightforward, especially with our ability to put the engine into coolant purge mode to bleed the system.

If and when the domestic aftermarket catches up with the coolant tank issues and offers an aluminum solution for both tanks anyone care to guess the pricing? Just estimating but once the Grenadier tax is added I’ll hazard a guess of anywhere from $600 to $800 per tank but I fear I’m underestimating. I guess it comes down to how much are we willing to pay for confidence and reliability thanks again IA for forcing us to seek solutions elsewhere.
